No sound card after reinstallation Win.XP

First let me say "I'm a novice." After reinstalling Windows XP Home. My sound device was gone. Also, we now have to hit F1 to get to our user names. Actually, I don't recall how I installed the O/S. Prior to installing (after the system crashed) there was no problem sound normal boot etc..
I need help ......Please.
