Can't reformat disk

i had some major problems with my lap top so i decided to reformat my hard drive but every time i try to do so an error comes up, anyone know why or what i can do?

the error message says
Driver unloaded without cancelling pending operations

First off, how are you trying to reformat your harddrive? Are you booting up (using the start up disk, (Everything I am writing is assuming you have XP)) then pushing R for the recovery console then in the command prompt typing format c:??

I am using the start up disk and going through format that way, i'm not hitting R for the recovery console the command prompt doesn't come up, and yes i do have XP

I finally got it figured out, i reformatted it without using the start up disk.
