Locking up

First, I am completely illiterate about my computer. However, I know enough to know it isn't working right. If the computer sits idle for 30 minutes, it freezes up. I've checked the power settings, hibernate, etc. but nothing helps except to do a hard boot. HELP!!!

I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say it's either the video card [drivers] or the ram. Those seem to be the most likely culpreits for frequent unexplained lockups.
