Internet partially stops working after a few hours

So, I have seen posts about this problem from many people, but as of yet no concrete solution. has anyone come up with a cause and solution to this issue of certain internet application ceasing to work after a certain amount of time? My XP machine has been running into the problem of after a couple hours no longer being able to access the internet via either IE or FireFox. Other internet connectivity seems to be somewhat working. All I need to do to get things to continue working again is log off, then log back in (NOT REBOOT, although reboot also fixes the issue for a few hours).

This problem first hit me a couple of months ago. I temporarily fixed the problem by running Norton AntiVirus, SpyBot Search and Destroy, and Adaware in Safe mode with recovery turned off. This seemed to fix the problem for a few days, but then it came back again. So I repeated the steps, but this time I unistalled a bunch of unused apps, and reset my Winsock Catalogue by executing the command "netsh winsock reset " from a DOS prompt.

This solved my problems for a few weeks, but now the problem has once again come back, and now nothing I do is fixing the problem (I've tried everything I listed above to no avail). I have updated all my AdWare programs and Norton Anti-Virus to the lates definitions, and I run all these adware and virus detection programs in Safe mode.

Please, anyone with insight as to what's going on, please let me in on the secret.

Thanx,

Jz.

Hmm, I indeed sounds like you have somthing blocking you. My guess would be a program like NewDotNet (spyware). If you want to ensure that it is not spyware.

Download hijackThis. Extract it to its own folder. Then run it and select. Do system scan and save log. Post the contents of the log that pops up.

I have run HiJackThis before to no real informative result. I will run it again tonight anyway since nothing that has worked in the past is working now. Thank you for the reply!

I did see some post talking about Norton possibly being a culprit. Anyone think disabling, then re-enabling Norton will have any effect?

Guess I'll try that too.

Your HJT log indicates one trojan infection (winram32.exe), so there's a good possibility that there are other infections lurking as well. Soooo- off to the Viruses, Spyware, and other Nasties forum we go....

Thank you for the reply!

So, as I stated above, I've used Norton AntiVirus, Adaware, and Spybot Search and Destroy, all run in Safe Mode as complete System Scans. You'd think I'd have caught all the nasties.

So what do I need to do now to get this bugger out of my system? And other lurkers as well? And what does winram32 do? Guess I'll start searching through this particular forum for other mentions of WinRam to get a head start.

Thanx again,

Jz.

I'd go with a little more firepower than Ad Aware and SpyBot can provide:

You will need to close/quit all web browser programs and disconnect from the Internet for much of the following, so you should print out these instructions or save them into a text file with Notepad.

1. Download and install the following utilities:

CCleaner - www.ccleaner.com
ewido Anti-malware (14 day trial version) - http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Windows Defender - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx

- Open ewido. In the main screen, click "Update" and click "Start Update". After the update process completes, exit from Ewido.

- Open Norton antivirus and make sure that it has the most current virus definitions installed. Again- don't scan yet, just close the program once it's updated.

2. Run HijackThis again, put a check in the box to the left of the following entry, and then click the "Fix Checked" button. Close HJT once the fix is completed:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Winram32 Driver] winram32.exe

3. Reboot into Safe Mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key just as your computer is starting up).

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types". Close Explorer after that.

* Run CCleaner.
- Go to Options-> Advanced: Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
- Go to Options>CustomFolders>Add Folder>Navigate to these folders (click on bold file once and hit OK) :
* C:\Windows\Temp
* C:\Windows\Prefetch
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ (This will delete all your cached internet content including cookies.)
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp
* C:\Documents and Settings\<any other user's Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other user's Profile>\Local Settings\Temp
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Cookies
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Cookies
Hit OK

- In left pane, scroll down to "Advanced, Custom Folders", put a check in Custom Folders

- Click on Run Cleaner
It may take a while for the program to perform its cleaning, so be patient. Close the program when it has finished.

- Run Norton and ewido; have the programs fix all malicious items they find.

When ewido finds the first malicious object on your system, it will ask you if it should clean it. When it asks this, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections", then choose clean and click OK.
Save the log file that ewido will create after it finishes scanning; you'll be including that log in your next post here.

- Open Explorer again and look for the C:\WINDOWS\system32\winram32.exe file. Delete it if it still exists.

3. Empty your Recycle Bin and reboot normally

4. Run HijackThis again, and post the new log. Also post the log that ewido generated.
