Access Denied

Hi,
I have Microsoft Windows XP (OEM) installed on my laptop.
As the admin I had a password.
While doing file disk fragmentation or disk cleanup and after rebooting I was asked to enter the product key. When I tried to do so it did not work, anyway to make long story short I ended up purchasing a new version of Windows XP (Professional).
I installed XP on the same laptop, and when I tried to access the files that were in the My Documents directory I was given "Access is denied" message.
I appreciate any help that can be provided.
