Hi,
I have Windows XP SP2 & Dot Net 2003 installed in my laptop. Actually i installed Dot Net couple of months back & i didn't work in that. Couple of days back, when i tried to create a sample ASP .NET / C# web project, it gave the following error
The Web server reported the following error when attempting to create or open the Web project located at the following URL: 'http://localhost/TestSB/WebApplication1'. 'HTTP/1.1 500 Server Error'.
The event viewer had the following warning message.
Source: W3SVC
EventID: 36
User: N/A
The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC'. The error was 'The specified metadata was not found.
'.
I am breaking my head for the past 2 days - trying to find the reason for this problem.
Can someone please help me to fix this problem.
THanks in advance.

Wish I had more time to give you a list of thing to check, but sorry....
Did you check out the settings in IIS?
What I would do (2 days is just too long) is uninstall IIS, uninstall VS, reboot, install IIS, reboot, Install VS....
....seems reinstalling is MS's unofficial No.1 fix to everything.

Hi,
I know how to solve this error ,
It is your IIS server is not configure wiht ASP.net or IIS is crashed, it normally happnes when we dont shutdown system properly,
For solution
1. Install IIS again and check with your broswer
http://localhost
2. Install .Net Framework again
it will configure your IIS with ASP.net ASAPI extension.
Try this
Best of luck

I was able to resolve this issue after struggling a lot. the solution that worked was making the msdtc service start and reseting the IIS. Detailed steps are given in the following post:
