It is possible that you blocked access to your own router or modem when one of those annoying popups appeared in the bottom right hand corner of your screen. It would have said like "(some ip address here) is trying to access your computer. Accept or deny". If you said deny, you cant get the internet because you it would be blocking your own modem/router from connecting to your computer.
