what computer supports PCIe the best?

I'm buying a new PC for my gaming-obsessed son's birthday and I'm trying to figure out if there is any advantage to (very expensive) machines such as Voodoo compared to a high-end Dell (for example) with the best nVidia PCIe card. In other words is it worth the extra $2000 in terms of performance or how long the machine last before becoming obselete for new games? Any thoughts, anyone?
