Help, PC will not boot- no signal to monitor

I last used my computer on Sunday without any problems. Tuesday I tried to turn the system on, but it would not work. I tried for a few more "pushes " on the ON button and finally I heard it start up. But the ON light did not come on, and the hard drive light stayed lit. My monitor stated that MONITOR IS WORKING. WAITING FOR SIGNAL FROM COMPUTER. I cannot open my cd drive, my CAPS, SCROLL, NUMBER locks come on and then fade to dim. I removed all of the plugs to make sure they were all connected correctly and they were. There wasn't any unfamiliar activity going on with this. It is an emachines windows XP. I shut off the system and try again, and I have to attempt several times to get it to start-only to be the same as described above. I have been searching this forum and have been seeing "bad video card" or "corrupted hard drive" or "bad motherboard". I do not know much about computers, but I am learning. I am not able to get online at home so I am doing this at work. Thanks for your help.
