HELP! Old computer is holding my pictures hostage!

YIKES! Im not a geek unless you count being a nurse!
Im just lookign to find some info from the experts. I have about an intermediate level of computer knowledge so please be gentle...lol
I recently bought a new computer. My old one crashed and I have several thousand pictures Id like to retrieve from it. The problem is ...it wont even turn on.
