System Restore Help

I just got a new Dell Computer about 6 weeks ago. I am trying to do a system restore. It won't allow me. I run Windows XP. Any ideas?

What exactly do you mean by "won't allow you"?
Remember that we're not sitting there at the computer with you, so you need to provide as much specific info as possible in your posts.

The computer goes through the initial steps of the restore (making a copy of something, I think). Then after the computer restarts, I get the restore window telling me that it was unable to restore the system to that point. (I am choosing one of the dates that the computer has offerred me a points in time where a restore can made.)
Please excuse my ignorance.
