Strange Boot-up problem

Hi folks,

Yesterday my PC took a very random turn and decided to stop booting into Windows XP. Usually the boot sequence goes past the user accounts screen since i am the only user on the PC and continues on into Windows.

What is now happening is that i get a brief view of my desktop wallpaper before i'm thrown back to the user accounts screen. When i click to load my profile, it says loading personal settings, then I get another brief look at my wallpaper before it throws me back to the user accounts screen again. It does this over and over.
So, basically I can't get any further inot Windows than seeing my wallpaper for a few seconds and i'm completely confused as to why. I haven't done anything different such as install new hardware, etc. The only thing i've done differently in the last few days is install a new game in my PC, but i went into safe mode and tried to system restore to a time before the install, but it does not do anything.

Has anyone come across this before or have any idea why this is happening?

Many thanks.

try:

- last know good config
- chkdsk /r
- repair installation of windows xp

for some guidance, go to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307852/ (for last known good config)
http://www.schrockinnovations.com/chkdsk.php (for chkdsk /r)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...ps/doug92.mspx (for repair installation of windows xp)

if it doesn't help, you might be infected with a virus, spyware or some malicious program. you might need more tools like hjt. just do the 3 OS troubleshooting first and check if helps.

good luck.
