Hi folks!
I'm new here, I've just run "Hijackthis" and obviously I'm not sure what to make of the results. :o
Could someone please have a look at the log file and tell me what's safe to fix?
Thanks in advance, Kris

That doesn't look very good :-|, have you run Ad-Aware and Spybot?
If you haven't, then do this: (thanks http://www.zerosrealm.com/scanning.php)
1. Download Spybot S&D from http://www.safer-networking.org, and install accepting the Default Settings
2. Run Spybot
3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
4. Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ and download and install the Updates.
5. Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’
6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ (RED) entries ‘BLACK’ entries and ‘GREEN’ (GREEN) entries in the window
7. Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
8. Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.
9. REBOOT
Scanning in Ad-Aware:
1. Download and Install AdAware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ , keeping the default options. However you will need to change some of the settings before your first scan
2. Go to Start > Programs > Lavasoft and click on AdAware 6 to open the program
3. Look at the icons on the top right of the page and click on the ‘world’ and let AdAware update the spyware reference list
4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window
1. In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected:
Automatically save log-file
Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
2. Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select :
Scan Within Archives
Scan Active Processes
Scan Registry
Deep Scan Registry
Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
Scan my Hosts file
Under ‘Click here to select drives + folders’, choose:
All of your hard drives
3. Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select:
Include additional process information
Include additional file information
Include environment information
Include additional object details
4. Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select:
Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
Unload recognized processes during scanning
Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
6. Click ‘Start’ and on the next screen choose ‘Activate in-depth Scan’ at the bottom of the page and then choose:
Use Custom Scanning Options
7. Click ‘Next’ and AdAware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.
8. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’
9. REBOOT
10. RESCAN with HijackThis and POST your logfile in the same thread using ‘Add Reply’. Do not attempt to fix anything in Hijackthis yourself!

Ok. Please do the following & we will see if we can get it sorted for you.
Download CWShredder from here & run it. Select the fix button & it will get rid of everything related to CoolWebSearch that is stored in it's database. Close ALL windows, including IE, before running CWShredder.
To help prevent this from happening again, install the patches for the vulnerabilities that this hijacker exploits by going here for your critical updates.

(still gotta download that other stuff you mentioned)
Funnily enough when I logged onto AOL just now no web pages would open. I did Ctrl-Alt-delete and the CPU was at 100% and I noticed some Network crap was causing the CPU to be busy so I stopped that process because I've not on any network and then web pages opened!

The only thing left to do is to uninstall Messenger Plus as it comes bundled with Lop. You can reinstall it manually & not install the 3rd party sponsor.

By the way, any thoughs on what I said about "SVCHOST"? Could this be infected with something? It says it's a NETWORK SERVICE and web pages don't seem to want to open unless I end process on it.
Hard to say unless I can see what was running at the time. You can have multiple instances of svchost.exe running.
With Mess Plus, when you start the install it should give you the option for an auto install or selective install. Then you choose only the Messenger components for installation.
Please go here & install ALL critical updates required for your system too.
