Hi I am posting this here after Catweazle requested I post in security not in windows 98, if someone can remove my post from the win 9x ME forum then please do so to avoid cross posts.
My computer seems to be in serious difficulty. I am running windows 98 second edition 4.10.2222 A and I think the problems started after I changed from Norton to PCCillin.
At apparently random times as I'm using my computer, although usually immidiately after startup I get the following dialog box (as best I can represent it) popping up
title: microsoft visual c++ runtime library
Runtime error!
Program C:\WINDOWS\EXPLRER.EXE
This aplication has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.
OK
I imagine that visual c++ has nothing to do with it but may be picking up an "illegal operation and will terminate" error and sending this error instead. I know sometimes I get dialogs with the option to debug programs in vc++ if they perform an illegl opperation so it may be a similar thing. The error can occur whether visual c++ is running or not.
when I click ok my taskbar vanishes and the icons on my desktp vanish, but I can still continue to use open windows.
I have been living with the problem a little while now by ignoring the dialog box. It does not stop me working with other windows so I just shove it to one side and keep working I can quite happily open new programs etc. However once the box has appeared things start gradually stopping working such as menus won't open and in Internet Explorer some buttons stop working and some links (those that open new windows) stop working.
I also have a problem in internet explorer that started at about the same time. Some pages don't load or work proerly for example on ebay if I click a thumbnailed picture to show the large one nothing happens and in yahoo mail not all the graphics load properly, the adverts mostly show action cancelled errors, the main text box for writing emails doesn't appear and some of the buttons don't work.
Maybe these are related or maybe not.
Since my original post I have run Spybot again but only found 2 errors which I fixed. I installed AdAware and run its scan and found eighty-odd problms. I fixed them all except dhvx.cpy.dll which adaware can't do. I have seen a fix for this somewhere on this forum but can't for the life of me find it (if anyone knows how to get rid I'd be grateful)
Since doing this I've not had the explore error, but as it comes along at random times I don't know if it's fixed or not. The problem with internet explorer is still there. I've tried reinstalling java on the off chance that this might help but it hasn't.
Any advice would be much appreciated and I've includes a hjt log below f it's of any use.
Cheers
Phil

Thanks greatly caperjack. Did as you said, athough the folder you said had already gone when I went to delete it. the .cpy.dll file has gone to and ad-aware and spybot both find no problems.
Again many thanks for your help. So far no explorer errors although I still have the same problems with internet explorer.
Here is my log as you asked
