New Win32 virus detected but cannot clean

  #1
Dec 30th, 2006
My teenage son was complaining about how slow his internet connection was, and how the connection kept hanging on him, so i asked him to run a complete virus scan, He is running the latest Mcfee VirusScan, which reported that it had detected "New Win32" in the C:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe. It also reports that it cannot clean, quarantine, or delete this file. McAfee didn't have anything to report when we tried to get additional information. We tried running in safe mode, but got the same results. We read other threads, in this forum, that referred to HiJackthis so we ran it and have included the logfile below. I dont want to 'fix' anything before we get another opinion so I thought that I would run this past you all first.
I know that you were able to help others with this issue. Who know, you may even spot somthing else on his PC.
Any help would be appreciated.

Download
SDFix
and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the
following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the
    Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract
    All
    ,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to
    start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the
registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool
will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and
display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load
    your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the
contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with
    a new HijackThis log

Please download miekiemoes' LQfix batch here:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/LQfix.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.
It may be best to to right click on the link and select 'Save As' and save it to your desk top.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please run LQfix.bat. When finished, restart your computer in normal mode.

Re: New Win32 virus detected but cannot clean

Hi, had the same problem: Had the New Win32 virus, picked up by McAfee, but could not delete, clean or quarantine it.

Try this, it worked for me:

in the Start/run... type in the command SFC/Scannow. This command will check all your system files and replace or fix any that have been corrupted or changed. (Make sure you have a copy of your OS handy, will ask for the CD). The New Win32 virus attaches itself to the winlogon.exe file, which is a system file and therefore cannot be deleted or quarantined. The SFC/scannow command fixes this corrupt file and any others that might have been corrupted and now you are able to scan your pc.

Next, I went to the McAfee website and downloaded the latest bootscan.exe file to do a Bootscan virus check in safe mode and I also did a virus scan in DOS mode with McAfee's latest Superdat file.

These three processes got rid of my virus problem and restored all system files to peak form!

Make sure you disable your system restore first!

good luck, hope it works for you

P.S. McAfee did not have any idea on how to get rid of this virus, spent countless time with their tech support to no avail!

Sounds like a real good reason to dump McAfee...

Try AVG free edition. It always works for me.

Real good tip on running the SFC/Scannow command. That is one I was not aware of. Will log that into my repair notes.

Note: Had tried various external/on line scans to hope to route out this virus, scans included: Norton Antivirus, Bitdefender, Trendmicro, Panda and AVG. NONE of these other antivirus programs even picked up the virus. So as far as McAfee, yes, there needs to be a better antivirus program out there that not only can detect but remove the virus, but at least it caught the virus. Also, the reason McAfee couldn't clean, disinfect or quarantine the virus was because it embedded itself onto a system file, which needed repair before you could delete the virus.

Once the system file of winlogon.exe was repaired, McAfee got rid of the virus with no problems.

Go to Start>Run and type in SFC /scannow including the space. You need to have your installation CD handy.

Crunchie,
I ran the SFC /scannow command and it went through the process but then terminated without reporting or prompting for anything. I have been away on business and have just returned, sorry about the delay in getting back to you. I re-ran the McAfee after updating to latest definitions, but still no luck. It's now reporting a different virus. It reports that winlogin.exe is infected with Spy-Agent.n and connot be cleaned or quarrantined. What's nex?
