File Server or other IST project?

Hi everyone. A professor of mine suggested I try to do an IST project so I can pick up a credit to keep me at full time student status. One he suggested is building a server. I thought maybe I could build a file server. But I do not know how difficult this is or how to do it. Also what is the cost on something like this? I thought with something like this atleast my Mom could use it for her business. Do you guys have any other suggestions on something I could do for a project? Thank you
