Apple Mail Connectivity

Several days ago, my ISP (Cox) had an outage affecting POP accounts. When the outage was complete, I attempted to retrieve email. Apple Mail started the online process, but timed out after a minute without connecting to the ISP server and then went offline. Repeated attempts to get Cox Tech support to help have been a waste of time. Their response is the problem isn't on their end and they don't support this mail client. Currently, I'm only able to get to mail by going directly to the web mail on the ISP server (cumbersome and slow). I've verified my settings in system pref>network disabled NAV and the firewall, but the problem still exists; I'm sort of hooked on continuing to use Apple Mail. Any suggestions on how to pinpoint the problem to get my Apple Mail back in operation?
