I cannot believe there is so many people having this problem. HEre is my issue:
I got a new ACER laptop for my sister yesterday. I went home to install it and the connection, well, you know. I tried everything, nothing works. I cannot connect to my wireless and get no internet in my "local only" ethernet connection.
I'm using a dlink router: my Toshiba laptop - with Vista - and my Compaq desktop, upgraded to Vista, work perfectly.
So I changed my router to my old linkys. the Acer works. It also works plugged directly to the modem.
I tried everything that is here, from prayers to reseting winsocks.
One thing I noted: my connection always shows the "autoconfiguration IPv4: value of 169.x.x.x. Even when I set specific IP address and DNS, etc, it would reset it back to automatic and show the autoconfiguration there. Any suggestions on how to change it?
tks,

just as an update; another new computer (different brand and different network cards) also running Vista Home Premium had the same problem. I'm pretty sure the issue is some sort of incompatibility with my Dlink -DI.524, since both worked on a Dlink WRT21xx (forgot the right model, but it is a newer one) and with a Linksys WRT524. What is funny to me is that my desktop with a Windows Vista Ultiamte and my work laptop both connect to the router without problems...

Is it possible that the problem with the automated IP of "169.254..." is being caused by a Home version(possibly the Premium) being ran through a LAN?
We've been having the same problem on our local network here in the office. It's a home premium version of vista but out of all the searching and sifting I've been doing, it seems as though there might be a pattern. Has anyone had this specific problem on other version of vista?
By the way, I'm not referring to the problem of "Local Internet Only". I think there are two different problems being discussed in this thread. After 15 pages of confusion, that tends to happen.
The fix that worked for mpeters13 didn't work for us. I didn't happen to notice any specifics as to whether what kind of network he is on or what version of Vista he was running.

My Sister's computer just had this problem; and I looked at all the solutions given in this forum and they are just to long winded and complicated.
Here is how u fix this problem; in your Network and sharing center select manage network connections from the left panel; then right click on the the connection you use to connect to the internet and select properties; in the list of "connection items" uncheck IPv6 and configure your IPv4 using DHCP or manually.
No REINSTALLS NEEDED!! seriously.

We sent the machine to someone else because we were tired of fooling with it and supposedly our solution was updating a driver. I can't say which driver, because the information was relayed to us by a man who thinks the solution was "removed the internet, and put it back" lol.
I'm actually very suprised we didn't even attempt that solution, even though we never thought in a hundred years that it was the problem. Whether or not the problem will return soon, or if it's just the fact that they tried the system on a different network, I don't know. But to me it's beginning to seem that this is a problem with multiple solutions.. never the same solution.

Shame on Microsoft, I 've not seen something like this before, it's totaly a supporting tragedy. Lots of people are complaining about "Local Only" and "Limited Connectivity" errors but there is not any answer or help from Microsoft. I've tried everyting that is suggested in the forum none of them have solved the problem. Final option; uninstal vista and use Linux. If these are by design, I thing there is a design error in Vista.

this is crazy my internet on my gateway laptop was working fine until two days ago when i started getting the local access only problem. I've tried pretty much everything on this thread to no avail. I am able to get online for maybe a minute and then it goes to local access only.
can someone tell me how to delete the netowrk connection so i can fix this because then delete button is greyed out

A laptop on my network was having the same problem. The thing is that she travels a lot and is rarely in the office. It was working fine until yesterday where it was in Local Access Only mode. There is also another Vista user in the office and his internet was working fine. I was pretty much pulling out my hair trying to fix this problem. The thing that also got me was both the wireless and LAN can connect to the network just fine, browsing through shared drives with no problems, but still could not get on the internet (local only on both). But I finally got it working. Here are the things I've done to try and get it working:
I did the following on both NIC and wireless connections.
1. I disabled and reenabled the NIC. It would give me a Local and Internet, but after a minute, it would go back to local.
2. I disabled IPv6 to no avail. So I reenabled it.
3. I flushed the DNS cache. Still no go.
4. I manually entered in IP and DNS setting which didnt work.
5. I restarted the ISP modem. -didnt work
6. I hooked the laptop directly into the modem which worked (getting on the internet) when entering an external IP address. But when i plugged the laptop back onto the network, it would show up as local only.
7. I wanted to avoid wiping that laptop clean and installing XP, so for giggles I restarted the router connected to the ISP modem. Guess what - that worked.
I can't believe I spend all that time and it didnt occur to me that power cycling the router would fix the problem. I gotta remember that acronym K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid). Good luck for those who still have this problem.
