My acer laptop keeps turning itself off..

It's an Acer Aspire 5610. Lovely machine. Until now, had it a few months no problems. Logged in today around 5pm, and it says "USB device malfunctioned".. the only usb device i had was my mouse, which i've been using since i bought it. So that struck me as odd.

Carried on using it, internet (wireless), WMPlayer, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and IE all running. Went to get a drink at around 6:45pm whilst it logged into GMail. Come back and it's off. turn it back on (it's running off the mains) and it checks disk and tells me

\progam files\Norton Antivirus\strt\oo144-~.tmp is not a valid size.
\progam files\Norton Antivirus\strt\oo414-~.tmp is not a valid size.

thats the onl;y problems (exact numbers in file name were probably different but very similar.) and it "fixed" them. So i logged in, kept off the net. Opened Norton and did a disk clean up as well as checking the file path (found one more temp file there thats it) and tried to open Norton Reports, see if something had got me and it went off again.

turn back on, not connected to mains, no mouse and it finds a bunch of dodgy temp files (as it cut out half way through the cleanup) and another norton file. Log in on the other account, no interent again and try and ad-aware scan. 7 minutes it was on for (in total) and it went off again. Now it's downstairs and i'm on my brothers pc( which sucks compared to the laptop). Could it be overheating? Seems abit odd to just start.

I guess booting in safe mode would be the first check, which i will try tomorrow (to makes sure it has cooled down incase it's simple overheating). But has anyone had this problem? Or know a possible solution? please help i love that machine

I don't know if it's virus or hardware, scans recently (before today) have come up clean

" ...see if something got me...." -chances are it did. Do this for a start...
===hijackthis: http://216.180.233.162/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
-install it to a new folder alongside your program files
-in that folder start HijackThis by dclicking the .exe; now close ALL other applications and any open windows including the explorer window containing HijackThis.
-Click the Scan and Save a Logfile button. Post the log here.

I think thats what you wanted. Well today it stayed on long enough to do that. And when i say "goes off" i mean straight off, no warning, nothing just boom black and powers gone like the battery's been taking out. I also vaccumed the fan as it might have been stuck or something. also tried system restore, one back a week, one back a month and it failed both times :-\ . Uninstalled Netbeans IDE, and Visual Express C++ and Web Deveopler as i installed both of them recently (in the last month)

well, that log is clean. So the file problems being reported look like being all due to improper shutdown. I'd ask you to do a Panda online scan for viruses [a few of which have are known to periodically shut down computers] but seven minutes would barely get the scan under way. It's really looking like a hardware problem, but 7 mins to shutdown is a rather catastrophic component failure mode. The sort of thing a power supply is good at doing [various outputs are monitored by the ps itself -they go out of range it shuts down immediately]. I'm afraid that i'm not being much help.... I hope someone else comes in with ideas. Good luck...

HI! I have just bought the exact same laptop Acer 5610 and what do you know, the other day it turned itself off! no warning at all just like you describe. When I restarted it did it again. It's been fine since. But that one time it couldn't have over heated cos it'd only just come on and was only web browsing, whereas i've previously used it for hours worth of audio recording with no probs.

Did anyone get to the bottom of this? can't be a coincidence surely!

nothing comes up on avast/avg/s&d scans that is out of the ordinary and it acts as if nothing happened when i reboot...

hmmm

I have the same laptop, and I have spoken to a few other people who have the one too. We all have the same problem!

It is definitely overheating; the problem is this:

When the laptop is working normally, the fan comes on every 2 minutes or so and the CPU temperature varies between 35-50C. Every now and then, for an unknown reason, the fan does not go on, the laptop gets hotter and hotter and eventually it cuts out.

It seems to be worse under high load or when hot. The fan can sometimes be restarted by blowing hard of sticking a vacuum onto the heat vent.

You can measure the temperature by Googling Speedfan, and downloading the program.

Unfortunately fan control on this model appears to be completly automated, you can't use the BIOS or do it through the OS.

If anyone knows a solution please please post it!

I have done some more research into this and it seems the most likely problem is a broken bearing in the fan. Every now and then, the bearing locks, preventing the fan from spinning and causing the laptop to overheat. As far as I can tell this is a batch problem with this particular laptop.

So there are two options; replace the fan, or live with it.

I am using Speedfan to monitor the temperatures; when it gets hot, either gently shaking the laptop or blowing air into the fan can usually get it going.

Sometimes running the laptop in a different orientation can help, like on its side.

If anyone has any more information, please post.
