I was thinking maybe out of memory?
I know that if i try to download large files such as .iso images from the net on a machine with only 128mb ram then it exhibits similar behaviour.

Did it exhibit such behaviour under IE6?
Maybe its a bug. or memory issue. I know IE7 uses much more memory than IE6, rendering it quite useless on pcs with under 256mb ram.
