Firefox: no, its not the end all solution, it has its own issues and in time it will be just as insecure as IE, when its hit Firefox 6, if it makes it that far. Oh, and AOL pays for it, incase you didn't know.
Microsoft & Windows: If you hate it so much, move to linux, or bsd, or anything else, stop complaning and move on.
Good starting places: Gentoo Novell SUSE Fedora Core Apple

Your HJT log does look clean (but by the way: HJT logs should only be posted in our Security forum).
Your Internet slowdown could be due to a number of reasons, some of them beyond your control.
How are you connected to the Net (cable, DSL, dial-up, etc.)?
Who is your Internet Service Provider??
It isn't uncommon to see your Net browsing speed in general bog down at certain hours; remember- most people in your particular time zone might be fast asleep, but thousands or millions of people a few hours ahead of or behind you might be logging in at the time when you experience the slowdown. If you're using one of the larger ISPs, this can put quite a load on their infrastructure.
In terms of the "returned" administrative emails: DO NOT open them! Just delete them if you know they aren't in response to anything you've sent. Those are bogus/forged messages used to transport viruses and other nasties.

If one of your machine is hit by a virus (suspect laptop) the Internet connection could slow down to a crawl. This because the virus (especially the recent ones) generates tonnes of outgoing connections to random nodes on the Internet to try and propagate itself.

DMR,
Thanks for your reply. I use cable to get on the internet and have been used to quick speed. The slow down seemed to occurr in a short amount of time (as opposed to gradually over lots of time). I have Cox communications as our provider.
Thanks for the comment about the returned messages. I usually just delete them and will definitely continue to do so.
