Cannot figure out how to implement linked list and rbtree for a project!

i am supposed to implement a linked list and a rbtree for a spell checker. Some of the info has been given by the lecturer but i am so lost as to where to start! We were not taught java and i dont know how to approach the problem 
...its due next wk and i would love it if any of you programmers out there could help me...i would sincerely appreciate it...i need some pointers or any help that u can possibly give... :o
