High# of Active IP Connections

I have a linksys wireless router and was using uTorrent. The network became very slow and all of the computer in the workgroup had trouble connecting to the internet. I was looking through the router's HTTPS config (which was quite slow as well) and noticed that there was a high number of Active IP connections listed (anywhere from 300 to 550).

I closed uTorrent and the network was still slow, so I restarted the router and it came back to normal, but the active connections was still up in the 150 - 200 range.

This seems really high, what could be causing it? Can I lower this? Think it has anything to do with uTorrent?
I honostly can't stand computers, networks, hardware, software, databases, programming languages, php, c++, mysql, windows, linux, macs, solaris, processors, protocols, servers, clients, chats, ims, emails, and so forth and so on; but I find myself rather intrigued...
