Presario 2585 booting and other problems

I bought a refurbished Presario 2585US on Ebay with WIN XP and upgraded to 1 GB of ram. It had trouble booting at first but finally came on after several attempts. The date was something like Jan. 2002 and time was also wrong. I realize this sounds like CMOS battery. I plugged it in and fully charged the battery before turning it on. After less than an hour the keyboard acted up (like FN key was stuck "on"). The main battery also showed it was fully charged (pushed button on side) but the 1st. light on the left was yellow even all the others were green. I emailed the seller and sent it back for a checkup (7 day hardware warranty). They said the keyboard was barely plugged into the motherboard (they re-plugged), the CMOS battery and other battery seemed OK, and they reseated the memory. When it arrived back it booted up fine and worked for several hours. Then the same keyboard and booting symptoms came back. A friend who is a software specialist checked it out and found the keyboard plug was loose again. It worked fine for an hour or two and back to the same symptoms (keyboard problems followed by partial and then NO booting - it seemed like it was trying to access the DVD / CD drive). Being unfamiliar with laptops, I don't want to "fool around" in it myself. Is the problem possibly the motherboard/power supply/BIOS/etc. or could it be in the software? I need to know if it's repairable because I got it for my son for college (he's using mine this week because of this issue). Any suggestions would be helpful!
