No Sound with real player 10.5 or Windows Media Player 9

Here is the problem - all of a sudden when I try to play a video in either real palyer or windows media player the video plays without sound.
I an not entirely sure exactly when things went wrong, but it was in the last 2-3 days.
(possibly after an automatic update by windows?)

I have run DXDIAG and can hear all the sounds and it reports no errors. (Seems like the sound card is working. Music still plays fine.)
I reinstalled both real and WMP which resulted in no change to the problem. Still no sound!

If I uninstall WMP9 then the video plays with sound in real player.

Any ideas why the sudden clash?

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

Win 2K
P4 2.8
1 gig ram
128mb ATI grahics card
on board sound
