File and Printer Sharing Query

I am new to networking and have a query/question.
I have two computers (one Windows XP and the other Windows Vista) and I have connected both to a combined broadband modem/router with built in firewall. Therefore, when I use the network setup wizard in XP I keep getting the message that because the computer is connected directly to the internet if I choose to turn on sharing, everyone on the internet will be able to see my files and use my printer.
I just want to be able to share files securely between my two machines on my network and without compromising my file security.
Can I do this with my current set-up, or do I have to get an ethernet cable and connect both computers together, then connect just one to the router and then share an internet connection?
Many thanks in advance.
