Job description

The Director of Software Development will be responsible for leading the technical design, implementation and maintenance of consumer-facing Internet applications for Bella Pictures. This position will work closely with internal stakeholders, manage outsourced development and software vendors, and will be accountable for the overall technical quality and performance of the resulting applications. This is a very hands-on position.

Job responsibilities

• Supervise internal and outsourced software development and testing resources; includes code and design reviews and managing transition to internal maintenance
• Design and build software for new Bella Pictures Web applications
• Write technical designs, both independently and in collaboration with outsourced software developers
• Implement software
• Lead efforts to integrate new and existing systems
• Monitor emerging software technologies for potential adoption within the company
• Do performance and capacity planning for new website features and to address Bella’s growth
• Work with management on planning new projects, and advise on technical feasibility and tradeoffs associated with new features

Required skills

• 4+ years experience in Internet software development, including all phases of the software development lifecycle
• Construction of highly scalable and interactive public web properties
• Experience with the LAMP solution stack
• Extensive Java development experience
• Experience with multiple programming languages and paradigms, as well as databases
• Familiarity with commonly used open source tools and frameworks
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including writing of technical design documentation

Preferred experience profile

• Has lead the development of new Web applications from the ground up, either within a startup environment or within an agency
• Broad technical experience relevant to online businesses, including object-oriented programming, relational databases, web technologies, and Unix
• Strong technical expertise in web development, particularly open source
• Experience in creating development standards and leading teams in complying with standards
• Experience managing other developers, either directly or as a development team leader

Minimum requirements

• 4 years experience in software development
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
