connect old mac monitor to pc

hi all,
i am trying to connect an old apple monitor (this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_Color_Display) to my ph dv6000 laptop. i've got all the adaptors i need to make it work with a vga cable (14 pins, no 9th pin), but the colour is coming out all red tinted, and when i set desktop space to 'extend desktop', the picture on the mac monitor goes into an hour-glass shape (pinched in the middle). when i drag a window onto the mac monitor the whole picture gets really small and blotchy. i wasn't sure if maybe my graphics card isn't compatible with this old monitor? any help would be much appreciated :)
