login problem

Hi,
I'm new to mac and forums so feel free to correct me if I'm in the wrong place. I was given an iMac with os x 10.2.8 and I tried to set up a new user, it froze up and I log off. Now I have a screen with no desktop just a blue screen with white spirals. Any way to get back without the start up disk.
