Imac G5 Freezes When I Lose Wireless Internet Signal

I have just signed up to a wireless network that involves using a modem with an antenna on it plugged into my ethernet port. The internet runs fun until the signal drops out.

I then find that I am unable to open new programs and also unable to click the apple symbol in order to restart or shut down, and end up having to switch off at the back. All I have is that damn spinning wheel.

Programs that are already open tend to still run fine.

CAN ANYBODY HELP ME!!

Is it bad for the computer to keep on switching it off at the back?
