Unable to bring up network - RHEL3 on VMWare ESX 2

Expand Post »
Hi,

I'm trying to build a RedHat VM on VMWare ESX. The build has gone fine, but I cannot get the bring up the network. I'm using a static IP, and when I use netconfig to configure network settings and restart the network services, it reports that eth0 has been brought up correctly.

redhat-config-network shows there is an eth0, but is inactive (and cannot be activated...)

But ifconfig shows that the interface is not up.
ifconfig eth0 192.168.70.110
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
etho: unknown interface: No such device

I think it may be a driver issue. In /etc/sysconfig/hwconf:
class: NETWORK
bus: PCI
detached: 0
device: eth0
driver: unknown
desc: "VMWare Inc|unknown device 15ad:0720"

Any ideas how to solve this one? Is there a specific driver I need for redhat to work with VMWare virtual NICs?

Thanks for any pointers....

Adrian

Check out the knowledgebase on VMWare's website. There is a known issue with some VMWare workstation versions and RH9 which may be related to your problem. The fix is a pretty simple config file change in the Linux OS.
