.torrent? what is it?

i'm not sure if this in the right spot but can someone tell me What is a .torrent file? and how can you open it? thanks

Torrents explained

That is the original site. You need a client for it to open .torrent files. Then the client will then go out and download said file. For linux, the red hat rpm is http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=BitTorrent and for debian testing or unstable

Or source tar.gz , zip or cvs

I have a torrent file which when i start downloading it never actually starts it sit's theer open just idle and gives no error. I am using Bittorrent and I am behind a firewall; Ieven tried opening the mentioned ports on the firewall but no luck; Please Guide

For example:
Seed : 6(14)
Peer: 7(12)
