wupdater.exe error message

I'm using windows xpPro and since yesterday when ever i try to log off my computer or turn off the computer i get an error message stating that: "wupdater.exe has failed to respond"
a blue timer runs through and then nothing happens. I either have to chose "end process now" or end the process in the task manager before i log off/turn off the computer. This is really frustrating!
what is this wupdater? any help??

Thanks Chris

Got the same problem after installing some stupid screensavers yesterday. On my system, the wupdater.exe file was located in "Program Files\Common Files\Keenware". First, I uninstalled the screensavers. The program is run at the Windows startup so, second, I deleted the corresponding registry entry (using RegCleaner by Jouni Vuorio, downloadable for example from here: http://www.downseek.com/download/21692.asp ), then deleted other registry entries for "Updater", deleted the Keenware directory itself and everything is running fine now.

The lesson is: don't fool around with useless rubbish like screensavers.

I have had that problem several times. I believe mine was related to some version of Norton AntiVirus since it was looking for the link in the Symantic directory. I first ram c:\windows\msconfig.exe amd unchecked the appropriate box and it fixed the problem, so I deleted registry entries to both wupdater and updater and everything is fine now. I also had similar problems with two programs called VirtualBouncer.exe and AdDestroyer.exe, both of which set up housekeeping in my root directory. I can't kill 'em as fast as they come in the door. ShieldsUp says I am Completely Stealth, but . . . .I finally switched from Win98 back to Linux and that fixed the problem. I think Microsoft must write these things themselves (Grin).

Hi

C:\Program Files\Common files\Updater\wupdater.exe <<< del Updater folder

But you will need to stop the exe file running first.....

You can remove the run key from the registry with regedit (backup the registry first)...then reboot....then delete the folder

Or try try to end task with Ctrl-Alt-Del.....then delete the folder

You could delete the folder in safemode

Or you could post a HJT log and we'll stop it running that way...

HI

Uninstall P2P Networking from add/remove programs in the control panel.

This is usualy installed with Kazaa....if you have had kazaa on your computer in the past, I suggest you run this program :-

After uninstalling kazaa...many files are left behind.
Download "kazaabegone"......the link to it is on this page :-

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/
------

If you don't want these ....include them in the list below :-

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.yehey.com

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.kotse.com

Close all browser windows - run hijackthis and tick to fix :-

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about_:blank

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about_:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about_:blank

Google it. There are plenty of references out there. That should always be your first step -- knowledge is power!
