cannot play music;sound cand not responding

Hi there. I have a compaq computer intel pentium three.when I play music through windows media player 9 I get the message "the audio playback doesnt not detect any sound hardware or is not correctly configured.When I reinstall the driver 'Soundmax intergrated digital audio I get the audio hardware is not responding correctly.Run setupand reset your configuration through installation.
What could be wrong

if you reinstalled your system, you may lost your chipset driver.
