windows 97 cd-r writing

A friend has an old laptop still running windows 97. He wants to dump some files on to a cd and put them on his new laptop. He can't get the cd drive to see a cd-r disc as being able to written on?

Will the drive see any CD? If not then the drive is probably dead or the cables loose etc.
if it can see a CD then it is likely that the cd -r is dead or has already been written to or started and failed to write to it thereby killing he disk.
Can it see a new cd-r disk?
