Expand Post »
I use bitdefender internet security for the most part.

Is this effective, do i need spyblaster or some other type of anti-spyware programjust to make sure?

what is the best all-in-one security package.

I would always recommend anti-spyware/anti-malware programs. A virus program doesn't generally provide protection against malware and spyware.
Here are the ones I recommend, they are all FREE by the way.
The KEY program is NOT spyblaster but SpywareBlasterfrom javacoolsoftware
Why is this one KEY? To quote from their website;
Quote ...
* Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
* Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
* Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.

And unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background.
Download, install, update, enable, including the Restricted Sites portion of the program.

Next one is Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Malwarebytes.org
Download, install, update. Run a quick scan at least weekly. Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
Run the program weekly at least, always updating before you scan.

Finally Spybot Search & Destroy from safer-networking.org
Download and install. Be sure NOT to use the TeaTimer portion of the program. It is more trouble than it is worth and besides with SpywareBlaster you don't need it.
* Click on "Update" in the left column.
* Click on "Search for Updates".
* Select a download location (usually one close to you).
* Click "Download Updates" and wait of the updating process to finish.
* Check that all Internet Explorer (web browser) windows are closed.
* Click "Search and Destroy" in the left column.
* Click "Check for Problems".
* Have Spybot remove/fix all the problems it identifies in RED.
That's pretty much it. These are the three I have used for a long time. Because of SpywareBlaster the other two rarely if ever find anything. But one cannot assume that all will be ok, this is why these two scanner/removers are also a must.
Also in your browser have cookie settings to only Accept 1st Party Cookies and Block 3rd Party cookies.
Keep temp files cleaned out too.
I use ATF-Cleaner
-- Click on ATF-Cleaner to run it
-- Where it says Select Files To Delete, Check the Select All Option
-- Click Empty Selected > OK

If you use Firefox browser, do this also:

* Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
* Click the Empty Selected button.
* NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser, do this also:

* Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
* Click the Empty Selected button.
* NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please Note: when running ANY of these security programs have background programs to a minimum and please be sure that browsers are closed.
