Downloader.MisleadApp

Expand Post »
Norton Internet Security 2008 detects this virus and rates it as high risk but cannot remove it. Directs me to Symantec site which gives instructions on removal, which I followed. However, the virus remains. How do I get rid of it, since I'm assuming it does pose a significant risk. Thanks for your assistance!!

Oops! ITs NOT running fine! All of a sudden, I cannot make connection to my internet provider's homepage when I click on my Internet icon. Looks like IE Explorer comes up but I get an HTTP 403 error, and when I click on the "More Information" button, I get the following message: "This error (HTTP 403 Forbidden) means that Internet Explorer was able to connect to the website, but it does not have permission to view the webpage.
For more information about HTTP errors, see Help." Checked with internet service provider, who says that service is OK and problem must be with IE Explorer. I'm getting through to you now through my "Internet Connection Help" feature under Tools on IE Explorer, by clicking on www.hp.com, then accessing your site through my Favorites Center. if that makes sense. I'm confused - HELP! Thanks!

Sorry for the false alarm! I guess I'm showing how much of a novice I am!! Anyhow, for some reason my default home page address apparently got reset to somewhere on the Microsoft website where I wasn't authorized to enter. I changed the default back to my IP and all seems to be working fine. Love these computers!

Re: Downloader.MisleadApp

You should do the following too;

Can you please do the following.

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ION&pf=desktop
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ION&pf=desktop
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ION&pf=desktop
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ION&pf=desktop

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.trymedia.com (HKLM)

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Any time you run Smitfraudfix you should choose the SCAN option, then post the log for examination. Running option 2 on an uninfected machine can cause problems.

My HijackThis scan detected the last three items on the list you provided, so I checked them and clicked "Fix Checked".

Thanks for the advice about posting the log from Smitfraudfix prior to running Option 2 - guess I should have figured that out since that's what I did for HijackThis after running the scan. I still have the log if it would be of any benefit to post it now.

Also, my Norton Internet Security 2008 scan indicated that hijackthis.exe made a large number of mods to my computer. Should I delete hijackthis.exe from my machine?

Thanks for your help!!
