Sorry, Don't know how to clean HJT Log

Expand Post »
I am new at this and do not know understand how to clean up my HJT log. I am afraid that I will remove something required for my system to run correctly. I do not have any viruses or malicious ads, just seems like an awful lot of garbage to have in the log. I also have 40+ processes running in my task manager and am not sure which ones I can end. Your help would be greatly appreciated. I try to do as much as I can, but I am not comfortable with this particular matter. Thanks in advance for anyone's help. LittleTomboy or LTB Here is my HJT Log.

Re: Sorry, Don't know how to clean HJT Log

You should update Hijackthis to the latest version (1.98.2); it may find something new. There's an update feature in hijackthis, or you can get it here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...load-5034.html

CTHELPER.EXE is not really needed; it's not harmful but does use some system resources. You can get more info on it here:
http://www.liutilities.com/products/...rary/cthelper/

You can find information on many processes and recommended settings here:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
and more info here:
http://www.liutilities.com/products/...rocesslibrary/

There's a link to a Hijackthis tutorial in this thread if your interested:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

After you update HJT, close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log.

if want to have hijackthis stop some of the 04s' then search HERE for a definition of each by copy and pasting the EXE in the seach on this SITE.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
like this one =O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTStartup] C:\Program Files\Creative\Splash Screen\CTEaxSpl.EXE /run
copy the ,CTStartup, from within the brackets and past it int o the search and you will get tis results back=[CTStartup N CTEaxSpl.exe Splash screen with sound on every boot up. Installed with a Sound Blaster Audigy soundcard ] and you decide if you want hijackthis to fix it so it doesent run at startup.

Before I do anything with the other links provided from the 2 replies, I want to make sure I have all of this cleaned up as much as possible. For example the processes that are running. I know I should not have close to 50 processes running. At least I don't think I should...not an expert at this by any means. But I have been told I have too many running. Thanks for your help so far. I will look forward to hearing what you can help me figure out now and understand why things are not needed. And I have gone through the tutorial for HJT. So thanks for that advice, as well. Look forward to getting this cleaned up. LittleTomboy

Re: Sorry, Don't know how to clean HJT Log

Hey LTB, you got an even newer version of HJT than I suggested! I didn't know that was out . You've got it running from a Temp folder though, it should be in a permanent folder (like you had before) so it can safely save backups.

As you mentioned in your first post, there is a lot of stuff in the log, but most of it is supposed to be there.

The only (minor) thing I see in your log is this:
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
You can have HJT fix that; maybe someone else can spot more.

Re: Sorry, Don't know how to clean HJT Log

Thanks dlh, I really appreciate it, and you too, caperjack. I am now working on going through some of the O4's via the website provided. I am also looking into my system processes that I am running. I will see what happens. If you or anyone comes across anything that may need to be checked, please do respond. I appreciate all the help and trying to learn what things are. And dlh, glad I could post a HJT log that showed you there was even a newer version out! LTB

It's a beta release that got "leaked" to the public. Merijn does not recommend that people use it; here's the blurb from his site:

HijackThis version 1.99 is currently in beta. Unfortunately, several sites have picked the file off the forums where I posted it in restricted sections and posted it as a public, final release.
Please refrain from using the HijackThis 1.99 beta, it has a crash bug and is not finished yet. Be patient and wait for the final version, which should be out soon. 'Beta' does not mean 'pretty much ready anyway'.
