Browsing Problems/HJT Log

Over night, my computer downloaded the automatic windows update and restarted. Once I logged back on, my browser would not connect to the internet. I knew i was online because I was running AIM. I restarted my computer and I was able to connect my browser to the internet. Soon after, about five minutes or so, it would not connect to any websites again. I tried doing a system restore but every point I went to said "unable to restore to this point". I didn't have this problem until my computer updated itself. Could it possibly be a browser hijack? If so, I could post a hijackthis log. Any ideas?

Thanks.

(NOTE: I had originally posted this in another forum but was told to come here with a hijackthis log.)

  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.

  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
    Select it and click Remove.

  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:

==

You will have to disable Spybot's Teatimer before we begin, as it will interfere with the fix. To do this can you start Spybot and go to the Mode button and select Advanced. Go to Tools > Resident and uncheck the box next to Tea-Timer. Make sure that the icon in the system tray is no longer there. If it is, just right click on it and select "Exit".
Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.
Do not forget to re-enable teatimer when we are done :).
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following, if present:

Viewpoint Manager,Viewpoint Media Player,Viewpoint Toolbar

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-us8l.hpwis.com

O2 - BHO: Winamp Toolbar Loader - {25CEE8EC-5730-41bc-8B58-22DDC8AB8C20} - C:\Program Files\Winamp Toolbar\winamptb.dll (file missing)

O3 - Toolbar: Winamp Toolbar - {EBF2BA02-9094-4c5a-858B-BB198F3D8DE2} - C:\Program Files\Winamp Toolbar\winamptb.dll (file missing)

O4 - Global Startup: BTTray.lnk = ?

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following: Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

===============

Download and run Winsockfix from here http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml

==

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

Link works fine for me.

Try a system restore to before the M$ updates were installed. I would set the updates to manual if I were you and then choose which updates to install. Too many ppl have had their pc's frazzled because of bad updates.

the reset teatimer link is just a jumble of code, i tried right clicking to save it, and it just saved it as a note file.

EDIT: I just had to open it through IE rather than Firefox.

Go to Start | Run and type in ipconfig /flushdns and hit the ok button.
Try resetting your modem/router too.

I went to the website and followed the instructions . I ended up opening the CMD prompt and pinging an IP address and then a domain name (as per the steps, I did YAHOO). I was able to ping the domain name (yahoo.com) but not the IP address. The instructions were one "Enternet 300" which I'm not wholly sure what that is. Any new ideas?

Download Dial-a-Fix and run it. Select the 'Check all' (green arrow) and then hit 'GO.'
Reboot when done and see how things are now.

That's what I got when I ran the diagnostic. I'm now looking at resetting the TCP/IP. Recommended?

You might want to look at updating or reinstalling the drivers for the Realtek RTL8139 C+ Fast Ethernet NIC.

Can also try resetting the TCP/IP if that doesn't work.

I usually try first from within the Device Manager. If that fails, you need to go to the manufacturers site.
