winsock.scr error message on every start up

Expand Post »
Everytime i start my system i get the standard windows error message saying winsock.scr has encountered a problem etc. and when i'm trying to do anything on my computer eg. access an internet page or just typing every now and again there will be a slight delay eg. when i'll type a word and look at the screen and nothing is there then a few seconds later the word appears. Can somebody please help me sort this problem out.

To anyone who can help thanks in advance.

Re: winsock.scr error message on every start up

Please do this.
Download 'Hijack This!'. http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
Save it in a convenient permanent folder such as C:\HJT\, double click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. Since Temporary folders are emptied now and then (the files are DELETED), it would not be a good idea to have your backups there. Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Close ALL windows except HJT

4. SCAN with HJT

5. POST the new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH

Re: winsock.scr error message on every start up

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe winsock.scr

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SystemTray] SysTray.Exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dxset.exe] C:\WINDOWS\dxsetu.exe

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - (no file)

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - (no file)

Now reboot into safe mode and delete the following files and folders if found .

SysTray.Exe,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,delete file WARNING Added as a result of the ALADINZ.P VIRUS! Note - this is not the valid System Tray (systray.exe) which resides in C:\Windows\System (Win9x/Me), C:\Winnt\System32 (WinNT/2K) or C:\Windows\System32 (WinXP). If you right-click on the real systray.exe the "Properties" reveal it to be a Microsoft file, make sure you delete the right one!!

C:\WINDOWS\dxsetu.exe,,,,delet file

to delete the above files and folder you will need to do the following
go to
Show hidden files & folders

"Fix Checked"...Reboot to SAFE mode to delete files
How to start computer in safe mode

reboot computer and post a new log

Re: winsock.scr error message on every start up

I've managed to take off the winsock.scr error message. I executed msconfig and then unchecked the box "shell=Explorer.exe winsock.scr" in System.ini / boot
Now at least I don't have that message, and I think my computer is running OK, although I have some troubles when I work with e-mule, because it's running too slow.
I don't now if there's a way to see if the virus that I have (that came with the football manager crack and that put winsock.scr file) made another modification in the system.ini file or in the config.sys, or another one like that.
If there's a way to find it out please let me know.

Thanks you, I hope you can solved your problem.

Re: winsock.scr error message on every start up

Download the Pocket KillBox
Unzip the file to your desktop.
Run Pocket Killbox and paste the full file path of each of the below files in the box and click on Standard File Kill and End Explorer Shell While Killing File. Click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle after you enter each file (see the files below).

C:\WINDOWS\dxsetu.exe
c:\windows\winsock.scr
c:\windows\dxsetu.exe
c:\windows\system32\winlog.com
c:\windows\system32\dxwinex.exe

Reboot afterwards if the files are successfully deleted.

If all files are not deleted, do not reboot yet. Run Pocket Killbox again and paste the full file path in the box and click on Delete on Reboot. Next click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle. You will get a message saying "File with be deleted on next reboot, Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" to reboot only after the last file you enter.
