I need help with something that’s infected my computer and I can't remove.

I first noticed something was wrong when any internet search engine links are re-directed to other suspicious sites. Additionally, my browser was unable to contact any anti-virus sites, responding with an unable to connect message. My anti-virus software was also being blocked from downloading updates.

I followed the instructions in the "read me before posting a request for assistance" thread by PhilliePhan. Here are the results:

I’m using the Trend-Micro Internet Security protection suite on Windows XP Pro SP3.
Hidden file viewing is enabled.
Downloaded ATF-Cleaner.
Checked add/remove programs. Don't think I saw anything suspicious.
Downloaded MS Malicious Software Removal Tool,
Updated Windows.
Re-booted.
Ran MS Malicious Software Removal Tool. No malicious software was detected.
A Trend-Micro auto update completed right after the MS Mal Software Tool finished.
Re-booted.
Ran ATF-Cleaner. Empty all, no problem.
Updated Malwarebytes Anit-Malware, full scan.
Ran ESET. No threats found.
Re-boot.
Ran HiJackThis. Collected uninstall list and saved log.
Trend-Micro scan. Found threats, removed some, quarantined others.

Trend-micro identifies infected files but is unable to remove them permanently. The last Trend-Micro scan shows the problem still exists. It has quarantined dll files prefixed with TDSS in the windows\system32 directory and some in windows\temp. Trend-Micro is unable to delete any of these files, they are locked or I lack sufficient privileges message (I am running as administrator). I cannot see any of these files in explorer and each time I run the scan it finds more dll files.

After doing the above, I note that the browser re-direction has stopped and my anti-virus is able to update. The re-appearance of the TDSS files when I do the Trend-Micro scans concerns me.

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Here are the Malwarebytes log, ESET log, uninstall list and HiJack log:

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :).

==========

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE

  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Physically disconnect from the internet.
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Hello Crunchie,

Thanks for the welcome and trying to help.

I ran ComboFix. The first thing it did was issue a message about detecting the presence of root kit activity and rebooted the PC. After booting, ran through stages, rebooted again. After the second reboot, my anti-virus must have restarted. ComboFix flashed a message I didn't catch and then the antivirus messaged permission to allow ComboFix to continue. I granted permission and ComboFix finished running. I hope that didn't screw anything up with ComboFix. Below are the two logs you requested -- ComboFix's and HiJackthis.

Please go to Jotti's or to virustotal and have this file scanned. Post the results back here.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\TDSSmqlt.sys

Could not locate the file TDSSmqlt.sys file through the web sites listed nor with explorer. Checked folder settings -- hidden files and system directories still visible and ran an explorer search on C: drive for TDSS*.* but no hits. Not sure what else to do?

A. Please RUN HijackThis Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
B. 1. Please open Notepad Click Start , then Run
Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

KillAll::

Driver::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\TDSSmqlt.sys

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Physically disconnect from the internet.

5. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

6. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

7. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), pleasere-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix then post the following reports/logs into your next reply:Combofix.txt
A new HijackThis log.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Hello Crunchie,

Ran HiJackThis and deleted the three items requested above via the Fix Checked button.

Ran the CFScript.txt file through ComboFix. Two messages were generated:
(1) "ComboFix has detected rootkit activity and needs to reboot the machine", and
(2) "Writing 'limitblankpassworduse' with data '1' failed". The PC booted twice with ComboFix; the first message happened before the first boot, the second message occurred after the second boot. I had the same problem with Trend Micro restarting after the second boot although I had it disabled. So I don't know if it interfered with ComboFix near the end.

Here is the ComboFix.txt file followed by the HiJackThis log I ran after everything was done:

Was able to run Jotti's on beep.sys last night but it found nothing wrong. Tried Kaspersky Scanner after Jotti. It requested I upgrade Java before it could continue, which I did. The scan ran for a couple of hours and wasn't complete. Had to get to bed and didn't want to leave the PC connected to internet with the Trend Micro disabled. Canceled the scan and disconnected the PC from the internet. Got back tonight and ran Virus Total on beep.sys. It seemed to find something. Then went to try Kaspersky again. It messaged to upgrade Java again but the Java site would only verfiy I had the correct version installed. Then I could not return to Kaspersky, I get ''cannot display webpage" message in the browser. I tried google and the search results are redirected again. Below are the Jotti and Virus Total scans. Also ran another HiJack and pasted it in:

File: beep.sys
Status: OK(Note: file has been scanned before. Therefore, this file's scan results will not be stored in the database)

TrojanScan

I tried to access the links you listed, but found my browser was blocked from the sites.

I re-ran MalwareByte and that seemed to allow the browser to access the sites.

Ran Bitdefender but it failed during it's start with an unable to download virus definitions message.

Panda Active Scan scanned my PC, detected 2 infected and 2 suspicious files then locked up and was non-responsive.

Trend Micro Housecall scanned, found 1 infection Joke.Agent but had no information available about it. It identified the infected file C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\nrtgge.sys. It also detected 20 HTTP cookies. The program locks up when it tries to clean/delete the files.

That's as far as I was able to get last evening. Intend to retry Bitdefender and attempt the eTrust scanner and Trojanscan tonight and post results.

Went back and tried to run Bitdefender. Was unable to access the web page.

eTrust scan downloaded but failed to run. Page error message when the scan buttin was clicked.

The Trojanscan downloaded and ran. Detected several infected items which I allowed it to delete. Re-booted the PC. The Trend Micro firewall was disabled and no longer available after boot. Tried uninstall/reinstall Trend Micro to get the firewall back. But after reinstalling still get no firewall and additional error messages. Incompatible with this version of windows, personal firewall has shut down and unable to recognize the software configuration restart to restore missing information. Have rebooted several times, same messages repeat.

Enabled windows firewall. Re-ran Malwarebytes and HiJackThis. Malwarebytes still detects trojans. Unable to run a Trend Mirco scan at this time.

Download the HostsXpert.
Run it and press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.
Note that if you have a custom host file, this will remove it.
See if you can access those sites now.
MBAM needs updating again. Latest is 1375

Downloaded and ran HostsXpert. Didn't seem to do anything. Trend Micro firewall is still disabled and getting same messages from Trend Micro,
-incompatible with this version of windows
-personal firewall has shut down
-unable to recognize the software configuration. Restart to restore missing information.
Restarting hasn't helped yet.

Couldn't access web sites nor update MalwareBytes. Re-ran MalwareBytes. Was then able to get updates and get web site access.

Tried BitDefender but it failed while trying to update virus signatures.

Panda Active Scan ran. Gave warning message Java was disabled so ran as IE plugin. Said my PC was not infected after scan.

Trend Micro Housecall. Scanned, found and deleted 7 cookies. Program requested to re-scan but failed with data transfer error.

ca Virus Scanner. Loaded but still failed to scan. Error on web page when scan button was clicked.

Windows Security Trojanscan ran. 4 files, 3 cookies found. Deleted files.

Rebooted, ran MalwareBytes and HiJackThis, logs below. Malwarebytes still detects same trojan. My Trend Micro Internet Security status -- says the anti-virus is working but the firewall is down. I cannot access the program's main console without getting the error messages stated above. Have enabled Windows firewall.

Can you tell me if we're making any progress here? Thanks.

Can you tell me if we're making any progress here? Thanks.

Doesn't look like it. Some things you can fix, some things you can't.

==

Download
SDFix
and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the
following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the
    Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract
    All
    ,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to
    start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the
    registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool
    will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and
    display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load
    your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the
    contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with
    a new HijackThis log

I am hopeful my PC problem can be resolved.

Downloaded and ran SDFix. Looking at the report it seems to have found the trojans.

My Trend Micro Internet Security anti-virus and firewall appear to be completely un-useable now, at least it won't restart. Checked security center and am now running on Windows firewall and anti-virus.

Here is the SDFix report and after it the HiJackThis log.

What do you think?

I spoke to soon.

Right after I finished sending the above post, the Trend Micro came up in the system tray -- it was auto updating. Took a little time then asked to reboot. After the boot, it loaded everything, anti-virus and the firewall is back. It wants to do a system scan but I decided to just let you know and wait for your comments/instructions before I did anything else. Although I am taking this as a good omen.

Have a look for the following and delete them if found;
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSoiqt.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSShrxr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSrtqp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSxfum.dll

No, couldn't find any of those files. Looked for them manually in windows explorer and also ran a search of the C: drive TDSS*.*. No hits.

Logs look good. How is your pc?

No, couldn't find any of those files. Looked for them manually in windows explorer and also ran a search of the C: drive TDSS*.*. No hits.

I just sorted out a problem with these files yesterday - Prevx CSI found them, but I couldn't see them in explorer (set to view hidden/sys files) and a search didn't find them either. I booted with UBCD4Win and those files were visible with a43 explorer and I was able to delete them from there.

Hello Crunchie and Cir,

Sorry I was off for so long. I work two jobs and just didn't get time last week. The trojan was still on my PC. It had blocked my browser from any useful internet access. I tried to run Malwarebytes, since it had at least got me to a state where I had internet, but something happened to it as well and would not run.

I had come across the UBCD4win too earlier in the week (and thanks for the tip Cir). Had access to a PC at work and was able to create the UBCD4win CD. Worked like a charm on my PC. Booted on the CD and found multiple files throughout the windows subdirectories with the TDSS prefix and deleted them. Ran the virus scanner built into the CD and it found several more infected files, deleted those as well. Rebooted back to my harddrive, Malwarebytes could now run and located infected files in restore. I turned restore off, rebooted, and turned it back on. Have run several scans with Malwarebytes and my Trend Micro security suite, both reporting the computer is now clean.

Here are the Malwarebytes HiJackThis log. Does everything look all right?

Can I get some some advice on what to keep and what/how to remove the downloaded programs I don't need which I've used through this process?

Thanks for all the help I've gotten so far.

Let's get rid of Combofix now that we are finished with it.

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:

  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

==========

Congratulations! Your log looks clean.

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Download CCleaner and install, then run it. It will clear out your temp folders.

  1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  2. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
  3. Close when finished.

====

An alternative to Ccleaner is ATF Cleaner.
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

====

Use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera, which in my opinion, is better still.

====

Use a firewall. It is an essential part of your computers security. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

====

Install and keep updated,
Spybot S&D.
Run it on a regular basis, following the maker's recommendations.

====

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

====

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

=====

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start | Run and type msconfig and press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.
