My browser got ambushed by spyware

Expand Post »
My wife was browsing the other day and clicked on an ad about earning extra income from home. It took her to a site that led to another then next thing you know a dozen or so browsers keep popping up continuously over and over and I eventually had to close all browsers through the task manager. Since that time I get an ad on 50% of the time that I surf to a new webpage, no matter what the site is. Its very annoying. This wasn't detected after numerous scans by spybot, ad-aware, symantec, and black-ice has never picked it up. I've also checked all my processes in the task manager and can't find anything suspicious running, and all startup items in msconfig are normal. If anyone else can find the problem, it would be greatly appreciated. My HiJackThis log is below:

Re: My browser got ambushed by spyware

Hi Powder; first of all never click on a pop-up ad, no matter how enticing it maybe. Don't even click on the X to close it, either use Task Manager (as you did), or right-click on it and select Close.

Get SpywareBlaster and/or SpywareGaurd to help prevent this from happening again.

Get Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search and Destroy to help remove most of what will get in anyway.

These are all free, and there are links to them in this thread:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

Keep them all updated, along with your antivirus program, and run them at least once a week.

Go to Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel and remove (if found):

DIGStream
WeatherBug

Close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and have it fix the following entries:

Reboot into Safe Mode

Go to
C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete hmktauvn.exe
C:\Program Files and delete the DIGStream folder
C:\WINDOWS and delete BTGrab.dll
Do a Search for WeatherBug and delete the folder

Reboot normally

Close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log please.

No, I searched several sites and found nothing about it. Doesn't even get a single hit on google.

Yeah, I'm usually able to keep my computers pretty clean. My wife however is very computer illiterate and very gullible.

I did all that you suggested with the following exceptions:
Weatherbug: I use this occasionally and it is something that I installed it myself. I've never had any problems with it. I didn't make any corrections or deletions related to this.
DIGStream: I visit ESPN's website quite often and enjoy thier "ESPN Motion" video clips, which uses DIGStream. I never had any problems with this and didn't make any corrections or deletions.
Homestead: Homestead.com is a site I use for filehosting. I didn't see any harm here either.

I still have no idea what that hkmtauvn is, I'm interested to know what this is if you have any info on it.

I did everything else and I'm still getting pop-ups, however, not as frequently as before.

With that done, here is my new HJT log:

Re: My browser got ambushed by spyware

Strange, not sure why that hkmtauvn file reappeared after the first fix and deletion, but not the 2nd time. That ZServ may have killed the pop-ups. I'll report back soon with results.

Re: My browser got ambushed by spyware

OK that latest fix solved the problem. I find it odd that the ZServ process didn't appear until the 2nd HJT scan, and the hkmtauvn.exe file reappeared only once. Nevertheless... thanks for the help.

Re: My browser got ambushed by spyware

You're not clean yet, though- a new nasty has appeared in your latest log:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win Server Updt] C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe

Have HJT fix the above entry, reboot into safe mode, and do the following:

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

- Delete the C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe file.

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders:

1. Local Settings\Temp
2. Cookies
3. History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

Note- If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed. Windows will allow you to delete the versions of those files which exist in sub-folders within the main Temp/Temorary folders, but might not let you delete the versions of those files that exist in the main Temp folders themselves; this is normal and OK.

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

- Reboot normally.

Post a fresh HJT log once you've done the above.

Sorry about the DIGStream, I looked it up and knew it wasn't a problem; I don't know why I included it.

You may want to reconsider WeatherBug, as it is reported to be associated with adware and spyware:
http://www.2-spyware.com/file-weather-exe.html
http://www.liutilities.com/products/...brary/weather/

As far as the Homestead, I wasn't sure, and fixing it wouldn't have caused any problems, it would have just come back the next time you visited the site.

No, I searched several sites and found nothing about it. Doesn't even get a single hit on google.
In refrence to hkmtauvn.exe, usually when you can't find info on something with Google, it's a pretty good indication its bad (or very new). However, you can usually right-click on a file and go to Properties to get information about it. A lack of info there pretty much guarantees it's not good.
