Virus invasion

Expand Post »
I have SpyBot and Ad-Aware, and I run them multiple times a day. Today I got a huge virus anyway. When I start Internet Explorer, it goes directly to a 'homepage', or rather some virus lion's den called Home Search. A pop-up screams 'YOU ARE INFECTED!' No really. I tried going to optonline, my real homepage, and resetting it several times but that doesn't work. I've already run Ad-aware and SpyBot and checked for updates on both several times but to no avail. If you know what I can do besides throw my computer into the highway, please tell me.

Re: Virus invasion

I'm really having trouble with this virus. My computer is acting slower than ever. Could someone please tell me the name and website of a free anti-virus download? Not the after-the-fact kind, but the kind that actually prevent the virus infection in the first place?
I'm too incompetent to find one on my own.

Re: Virus invasion

Are you too cheap to want to spend some money on keeping your system secure?

I've seen and tried free and cheap antivirus solutions and they don't do much of anything except giving you a false sense of security (especially against new virusses, some are moderately effective against old ones)..

This website is about helping people help themselves; if you can spell 'incompetent,' I doubt that you are.

This thread offers protective measures you should find useful:

(Yes, it even has a link to a free antivirus program)

Re: Virus invasion

I guess I am too cheap, Jwenting. Or gee, maybe just too broke. But I don't quite get your point, since you admit yourself that you've tried free virus protection. I don't care enough about the freaking thing to spend more money on it when I don't have to. Maybe you should call Computer Social Services on me.

Re: Virus invasion

1. You might want to post a HijackThis log for us to analyze.

2. You mentioned "Home Search"; if you really do have the Home Search Assistant (HSA) infection, you'll probably also need to download the About:Buster and HSRemove utilities.

Please see my first post in the following thread for instructions on where to dowload the above utilities and how to use them:
