Page Cannot be diplayed/DNS error message

Expand Post »
I'm getting the above error message, but not on every webpage I go to. I've tried a couple things like DNS purge and pinging my server and that all works fine.

I treid HiJack this and here is the contents of the logfile.

Judging from the header information in your log, neither your IE nor your version of Windows itself are current.

I wouldn't suggest upgrading to XP SP2 right now, but you should at least install SP1 and all related critical fixes. Also, the current IE is 6.00.2800.1106.

Although there's nothing else obviously "nasty" in your HJT log, the following entry worries me a bit. Can you tell us more about this:

O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) (rpcapd) - Unknown owner - %ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe" -d -f "%ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.ini (file missing)

WinPcap is a network packet-capturing utility; in other words, a network "sniffer". If you haven't knowing installed WinPcap or some network analysis utility (such as Ethereal) which uses WinPcap, I'd get rid of it ASAP. If you can remove it through your Add/Remove Programs control panel, do so. If you can't remove it that way, or if you knowing installed it, let us know.

Re: Page Cannot be diplayed/DNS error message

I didn't install that WinPCCap on purpose and when I saw that in the HackThis log, I too wondered about it.

I tried to remove it using the add/remove programs but it's not in the list.

I'll try updating my IE but as for Windows, when I have it search for updates it says I have everything except for SP2, which I'm not interested in having at the moment.

Thanks

Re: Page Cannot be diplayed/DNS error message

1. C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

The log entry above indicates that you had at least 1 instance of Internet Explorer running when you ran HijackThis.
Before fixing problems with HijackThis, you must make sure to close/quit ALL instances of your web browser! HijackThis cannot fully perform its fixes while browsers are running.

2. Once you are sure all browsers are closed:

- Run HijackThis again and have it fix the O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) (rpcapd) - Unknown owner - %ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe" -d -f "%ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.ini (file missing) entry.
- After HJT finishes that fix, open Windows explorer and delete the entire C:\ProgramFiles\WinPcap folder.

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

Re: Page Cannot be diplayed/DNS error message

Ok, so I did what you said and actually, once I updated IE, things seem to be fine and I can access the sites that I once could not.

I updated service pack 1 and now something else weird is happening! When I reboot, I get a screen that says that "one of my discs need to be checked for consistency" and it wants to check my 200gig slave drive.

I let it do it once before and it screwed a ton of my file that were on there. It sound up making it so the space on the drive was taken up but I couldn't access the files. Now I'm hitting escape to prevent it from checking for consistence....but that can't be a permanent fix. What do you suggest?

On the WinPC Cap thing, I see it still showing up in HiJack this even though I told it to fix it. I don't have a folder in C:\programfiles for this program. I do see one of my desktop icon are gone though. This makes me wonder if the app was actually something other than what you described....like maybe a video capture utility.

Here's the new log file......

Re: Page Cannot be diplayed/DNS error message

OH MY GOD!!!!

Now when I click on the G: drive (which was 1/2 of the 200 gig drive), it says "G:\is not accessible The Disc structure is corrupted and un-readable"

I hate Windows XP man. I never had problems like this with Win98 and only switched to XP so I could large hardrives. Now I can't trust my data to any of these hardrives cause it keep getting screwed up.

Please tell me someone knows how to fix this! There must be 40gig worth of file on there that I was just about to burn to DVD's before all of this happened.

Thanks

Re: Page Cannot be diplayed/DNS error message

I have to log off for the night now, but please:

Don't touch that system until one of us can get back to this !!!!

You might loose everything if you muck with it at all.

Re: Page Cannot be diplayed/DNS error message

I've fixed it. I figured I could get all of the data again if I had to so if all was lost then oh well. I just restarted the system and let Windows do it's thing. It recovered all and everything appears to be intact.

It frustrates me that this has happened twice now as it was only when I updated Windows that this happened. If you can't trust your O/S, how can you work effectively and not live in fear of losing your data?

Thanks for the help......I'm sure I'll be back!

Re: Page Cannot be diplayed/DNS error message

Ok, that didn't take long. Turns out that things aren't back to 100%. The drive and it's contents are fine but the whole "page won't display" thing is still haunting me.
