need help with pop-ups, PLEASE!

I just upgraded to DSL from dial-up, and all of a sudden I've entered pop-up hell. They were coming at a rate of several a minute at first. I ran Ad Aware, Spybot, and Norton Anti-Virus. After deleting everything I could with those, the pop-ups have slowed dramatically, but I'm still getting a few everytime I open a web browser. I'm a real novice at this stuff, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Here's my HJT log.

Hi buckhuckle, welcome to DaniWeb :) and welcome to the world of broadband (DSL) :) :(

As soon as possible, you should protect yourself by installing a hardware firewall router such as one made by Linksys, SMC, or Netgear.

Before fixing anything in your hijackthis log, you should put it into it's own folder; to do this, right-click on your desktop, select New, Folder, and give the new folder a name of your choosing (HJT or HijackThis would be good). Then, drag the hijackthis.exe icon that is on your desktop into this new folder.

After you've moved it, close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log please. If you have anything disabled in msconfig, enable it before you scan.

FYI -- BigFix should be set to start manually as it's a resource hog.

Hello! and welcome to the Daniweb forums.

Let's look for, and delete, any program segments(prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the 'problems' we're trying to remove from this system. To do this, let's:

1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

picsvr.exe*
nsvsvc.exe*

2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\picsvr\picsvr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsvsvc\nsvsvc.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

N2 - Netscape 6: user_pref("browser.search.defaultengine", "engine://C%3A%5CProgram%20Files%5CNetscape%5CNetscape%206%5Csearchplugins%5CSBWeb_01.src"); (C:\Documents and Settings\BRADLEY\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\wc4e1ndq.slt\prefs.js)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

When your done, rescan your system and make sure the following isn't present:

N3 - Netscape ... 5CSBWeb_01.src (or) 5CSBWeb_02.src

If it is, then fix that entry again; sometimes it'll take more than one pass. The actual entry is ok, and won't be deleted, it's the java wrapper marked in red that needs to be removed.

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\picsvr
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsvsvc

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

After rebooting your PC post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

All looks good to me :). You are welcome.

Just as a little clean up, do the following;

Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

This one too if Win2K or XP.
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Hi dlh. Thanks a lot for your help. I did what you said, and here's my new HJT log. By the way, I set BigFix to "gather manually" in the properties toolbar section. I'm not sure if that's the same as starting manually, but it was the closest thing I could find. Thanks again for your help.

To set BigFix to start manually:

Open your Control Panel, go to Administrative Tools, and open Services. Maximize the size of the Services window that pops up and scroll down the list to BigFix; right-click on it and choose Properties. About the middle of the window that comes up, you should see Startup type: Use the drop-down arrow to select Manual.

In addition to getting a firewall, asap, get SpywareBlaster (link in Crunchie's sig) and keep it updated.

Thanks dlh. I got spywareblaster, but when I followed your instructions to turn off BigFix, I couldn't find it. I went to Admin Tools and then to Services, but BigFix wasn't listed on that menu. Anywhere else I should look? Thanks again for your help.

Try this:

Go to Start, Run, and type in msconfig. When the new window comes up, click on the Startup tab and look for BigFix in the list; if it's there, remove the checkmark from the box.

If it's not there, click on the Services tab and see if it's in there.

Close msconfig; you will probably need to reboot.
