Unable to get rid of Hacktool.rootkit virus(/Trojan)

Expand Post »
I am a new user and apologise for using someone else's thread.
My apologies and thanks to DMR,
As I posted I am unable to get rid of this virus despite numerous virus killers and as requested here is the log of Hijackthis you thoughtfully provided a link for and instructions on use.
This virus is getting really annoying as my Virus alerts are popping up every 45-60 seconds.
can you help please

Re: Unable to get rid of Hacktool.rootkit virus(/Trojan)

try using a very non expensive software provided by eacceleration is called stopsign installation of the software is free but cleaning the virus and spyware is cheap the monthly membership is only 5 dollars a month and get rid of any spyware and viruses installed on your PC. I learned the hard way after buying norton and mcafee which monthly renewals goes 5 times stopsign. hope this solve your problem

Re: Unable to get rid of Hacktool.rootkit virus(/Trojan)

Hi Joe- thanks for reposting in this (separate) thread.

The following two log entries are indicative of a trojan infection, but there may very well be other infected components in areas of your system that HijackThis does not scan:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sysPersonalFirewall] msnmssgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [sysPersonalFirewall] msnmssgr.exe

Can you find any information in your anti-virus programs' report logs which gives more specific details concerning the names and locations of the infected files they've found?

Actually, we don't really recommend eAcceleration products; please read this for an explanation of the reasons. In general, before using any "anti-spyware" software, you should (at the least) consult the list of programs in the link above; there are many imposters out there...

Thanks for the advice,
as to your earlier query Norton Virus guard is coming up with location
C:\Documents and Settings\joe cutler\msdirectx.sys for the virus with the name hacktool.rootkit and that access to the file is denied.
Have searched for this file but cannot locate it also now getting alerts for w32.spybot.worm located in c:\windows\system32\msnmssgr.exe
hope you can help

Re: Unable to get rid of Hacktool.rootkit virus(/Trojan)

The worm and the rootkit are related, but unfortunately there are several variants of both.

1. Run Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool. Download link and more info here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;897079

2. Run a few of these other free scans, have them clean what they find, and post any relevant information they may report:

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm
http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp?cid=9914
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

3. Also post a fresh HJT log once you've finished the scans.

Thanks for the advice, all help is greatfully recieved and appreciated
did as you suggested sctually used all 5 scans, McAfee informed me of 6 viruses, on the following files
c:\ixplore.exe
c:\windows\sytem32\1355.exe
c:\windows\system 32\4892.exe
c:\windows\system32\6403.exe
c:\windows\system 32\8282.exe
All above Donloader-DC virused
and also c:\Windows\system32\mpsys.exe a multi-dropper -BN virus
Trend Micro Housecall scan identified 49 vulnerabilites and 5 spyware or adware files
none found either hacktool.rootkit or w32.spybot.worm
have cleaned quarentined and/or deleted above files
Panda found a virus in msnmssgr.exe file unable to delete or quarentine this but have changed profile from exe ending to com as suggested on a similar thread
Hopefully this information will help with getting rid of this annoyance, otherwise I'll probably have to reformat drive
