Every time I go to search something in the built in search bar in either IE8 or Safari, every link redirects me to a completely different address. I have ben using google as my default search engine, but the problem started when I had Bing set as the default. When I click on the search result I want, I can see the URL bar being redirected and changed into something else. I have tried Malware Bytes Anti Malware, but it does not find anything infected, and neither does my AVG Antivirus. I have also tried High Jack This and the following is the results:

Please Help, I do not know what to fix, nor do I want to try for fear of deleting necessary files!I need help ASAP because of college applications, and I do not feel comfortable entering private information such as social security with something like this on my system.

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :).

==========

Please update Malwarebytes Anti-malware and run a full scan. Remove what is found and post the log back here.

==

Please Run the ESET Online Scanner and post the ScanLog with your post for assistance.

  • You will need to use Internet Explorer to complete this scan.
  • You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.
  • Be sure the option to Remove found threats is Un-checked at this time (we may have it clean what it finds at a later time), and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
  • When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.

NOTE: If you are unable to complete the ESET scan, please try another from the list below:

Kaspersky Online Scanner Panda Active Scan Trend Micro HouseCall F-Secure Online Virus Scanner

This is the Malware Bytes Log File, the ESET scan is still running but i will post it as soon as it is finished

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE

  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Physically disconnect from the internet.
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Run Combofix ONCE only!!

I ran the ATF scanner, combofix, and then hijack this again. This is the log for ComboFix:

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Physically disconnect from the internet.

5. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

6. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

7. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next replyafter youre-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix:Combofix.txt
A new HijackThis log.
Please take note:

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

I would like to post the new ComboFix log, but everytime I run it by dragging the notepad file into it, it freezes at either stage 6a, 10, 32, or 50 and doesn't complete itself and create a log. I have tried restartjng my computer to no avail and have even tried deleting combofix altogether and saving it again to my desktop. Please help!

Make sure that you have combofix installed again before doing the following;

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

* Rkill.com
* Rkill.scr
* Rkill.pif
* Rkill.exe

* Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
* If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
* A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
* If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
* If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
* Do not reboot until instructed.
* If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run combofix script as given earlier.

I ran the Rkill.com link, and saved to my desktop, and the black DOS box showed up, and when it closed I ran combofix successfully. I was unable to get the log it produced because as soon as it finished scanning, it rebooted the computer. Now when I run combofix, it continues to freeze, but I dont know if I should should download Rkill again and then run Combofix again.

Try it in safe mode please and try not to leave it so long between posts as it only gives the infection a chance to breed.

Okay I ran ComboFix while Windows was in safe mode, and it ran successfully. The following is the log report. I will post the HijackThis log after this ComboFix log:

Combofix has gone from being run twice to now 25 times.
How is the pc?

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

It's best to disable real time protection applications as they sometimes interfere with the scan.

Check this link for any applicable programs you may have (check under How to Temporarily Disable your Anti-virus).

Click on Accept If your pop –up blocker blocks any windows from opening.

Click Run on the window that opens.

Windows Vista users you must open the web browser using the Run as Administrator command - accessible from the right-click menu from the browser shortcut.

  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • When completed, under Scan on the left side, click on My Computer.
  • This will start the scan of your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Click Report on the left side.
    • Click the Save Report button, and in the Save dialog box, type a name for the scan report file that you want to create and select its type as Text file. Click OK to save the file.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Please post the Kaspersky results.

Yeah, I had to keep restarting the ComboFix scan because it kept freezing on me, as much as for 3 hours without progress. But the computer seems to be fine, and the search bar problem is fixed, just IE8 takes a while to load, and I have to open a second window for it to load faster. The following is the Kaspersky Report:

Let's get rid of Combofix now that we are finished with it.

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

    ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

Not sure why IE8 would be slow opening, but if everything else seems ok, we can let you go :).

Thanks for all of your help! much appreciated!!

No worries :)
