Hi and welcome,
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBA-M) to your Desktop.

* DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt.

REBOOT after running MBA-M!

Run a new scan with HiJackThis, save the log. Post back with the MBA-M log and the HiJackThis log.

Now do the following:
Run the ESET Online Scanner and post the ScanLog with your next post

You will need to use Internet Explorer to to complete this scan.
You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.
Be sure the option to Remove found threats is and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.
Reboot the computer.
Next run HJT again and place check marks next to the following entries if they remain:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\RunOnce: [_nltide_3] rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSectionEx nLite.inf,C,,4,N (User 'LOCAL SERVICE')

After you have placed the check marks then click the Fix Checked button. Exit HJT and reboot.
Run a new HJT scan, save the log and post it back here with the ESET Scan log.

You STILL have malware showing in the HJT log, and again infection found in Temp files by ESET.
You need to do the following:
Please Download ATF-Cleaner.exe by Atribune (Windows XP, 2K, 2003 & Vista ONLY)

• You can put ATF-Cleaner on your Desktop for easy access.
RUN ATF-Cleaner.exe.

• Click on ATF-Cleaner to run it
• Where it says Select Files To Delete, Check the Select All Option
Click Empty Selected > OK

If you use Firefox browser, do this also:

* Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
* Click the Empty Selected button.
* NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, click No at the prompt.

Now you also need to change some settings in both Internet Explorer and in Firefox because obviously you have them set "too low". Even if you rarely use Internet Explorer you need to change these settings:

Open IE, click Tools, Internet Options.

Once that opens first do this: On the General Tab click Settings in Browsing History.
When that opens put a dot in Every visit to the page and then change disk space to read NO MORE than 20MB.
Next go to the Privacy Tab and click Advanced.
When that opens Put a check mark in Over ride Default Cookie Handling and then put a dot in Accept 1st party cookies, BLOCK 3rd party cookies and a check mark in Accept Session Cookies.
Ok your way out.

Next open Firefox. Click Tools, Options.
Click on Privacy. Make sure there is NO check mark in Accept 3rd party cookies.

Now because malware is still showing in your HJT log and ESET also found something I want you to run another, more powerful tool.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE

* You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
* Physically disconnect from the internet.
* Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

* Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
* When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
* Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Run Combofix ONCE only!!

You didn't update MBA-M. Current database is 3658. Please update it and run another Full Scan. Have it remove anything found, reboot and then do another HJT scan. Post back here with both logs.

Can you also generate an Uninstall list for me using HiJackThis and post that here.
To do this do the following:
1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into a reply.

Also, please Turn Off Windows Defender.
1.Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Defender.
2.Click Tools, and then click Options.
3.Clear the Use Windows Defender check box, and then click Save.

One item I see which CAN easily lead to infection is the use of Limewire, a P2P file sharing program. It was running in the background on your last HJT scan. P2P is one of the easiest ways to infect a computer PLUS much of the file sharing done is illegal.
Are your searches still being redirected?

hi judy,

i'm having the same problem again. i no longer have limewire. i went through the same procedures as last time, and when i installed mba-m, i received an error saying "unable to execute file: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe CreateProcess failed; code 2. The system cannot find the file specified."

please let me know what i can do to repair this so i can run mba-m. if you need my HJT log, it is posted below. thanks so much.

Sorry you are having problems again. I have to admit, I probably jumped too soon saying the thread was solved. One thing I didn't have you do was Uninstall Combofix and this definitely should have been done. So please do that now by following these instructions:
* Click START then RUN
* Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. The space between the combofix and the /uninstall, it must be there.
When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

Now with that done, I need to ask you why you felt you had to reinstall MBA-M? It should have still been on the system. It is a program you should have kept and continued to use. When did you uninstall it?

You most definitely have trojans on there and they did not show in your last logs.
Please look for the MBA-M program in Add/Remove and see if it is still there.
If it is please Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware using Add/Remove programs in the control panel.
Restart your computer (very important).
Download and run this utility. mbam-clean.exe
It will ask to restart your computer (please allow it to)
Download a randomized renamed mbam.exe version from here.
Place the renamed mbam.exe in the Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder on the infected PC and launch the renamed file.
Then malwarebytes should run. Update it and then do a Full System Scan with it. Have it Remove Everything found.
Reboot the system.

Next run the ESET Online Scanner and attach the ScanLog with your post for assistance.

* You will need to use Internet Explorer to to complete this scan.
* You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.

* Be sure the option to Remove found threats is checked and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
* When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.

Reboot the computer.
Run a new HJT scan and save the log. Post back with the MBA-M log, the ESET log and the new HJT log.

i removed all components of combofix and downloaded mbam clean, but when i ran it i received this error code: "SH getvalue failed with error code 0". and it will not allow me to go any further. the randomly generated MBAM file will not open at all when i download it, the loading hourglass just appears for a second and then disappears, and then nothing happens.

i figured i didn't need MBAM anymore after removing limewire, i didn't know that the particular problem i had could reappear! after getting it reinstalled i will most definitely keep it.

since posting my last message i am receiving pop up bubbles from my quick launch toolbar from something called "xp security tool 2010" which i have never seen before. the pop up box that appears on my desktop looks exactly like the windows security center window. every time it appears i close out of the box or bubble. i ran another HJT log since this problem started and will post it below.

i really appreciate your time and effort in helping me with this problem, judy. it means more than you could possibly know.

Obviously either all of the infection was not removed the last time, or your McAfee program was damaged by the first infection or you have unwittingly visited some dangerous websites. I think it may be all of the above.
Let's start by trying to remove this xp security tool 2010. These are the instructions which are pretty standard and are given on bleepingcomputer and other sites as well. They have worked very well and hopefully they will work for you. These work best when done using a USB flash drive to carry these programs to the infected computer. If you don't have one I recommend that you get one, they are not expensive.
From another computer, please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, or MBAM, and the reg files to a USB flash drive.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Download Link

FixExe.reg

Once you have downloaded all the necessary files to a removable device, you need to plug it into your infected computer so it can access them

On the infected computer make sure XP Internet Security 2010, Antivirus Vista 2010, or Win 7 Antispyware 2010 is running. If it is not, you can launch it by running any program on your computer as that will trigger the rogue program to run. Once running, do not close it during the entire length of this guide.

Now open the drive that corresponds to the flash drive that contains the removal programs. Once open, double-click on the FixExe.reg file. When Windows prompts whether or not you want to allow the data to be added to your computer, click on the Yes button.

Now you should be able to run the mbam-setup.exe file that you saved on your removable media in step 2. Double-click on this file to install MalwareBytes' on to your computer. When the installation begins, keep following the prompts in order to continue with the installation process. Do not make any changes to default settings and when the program has finished installing, make sure you leave both the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware checked. Then click on the Finish button. If you already have MalwareBytes' installed, simply launch it now and continue.
MBAM will now automatically start and you will see a message stating that you should update the program before performing a scan. As MBAM will automatically update itself after the install, you can press the OK button to close that box.
On the Scanner tab, make sure the the Perform full scan option is selected and then click on the Scan button to start scanning your computer for XP Security Tool 2010, XP Defender Pro, Vista Security Tool 2010, and Vista Defender Pro related files.
MBAM will now start scanning your computer for malware. This process can take quite a while, so we suggest you go and do something else and periodically check on the status of the scan.
Once the scan is finished you will receive a message that the scan is complete. Click ok.
Click on the Show Results button.
Make sure there are check marks next to all items found and click the Remove Selected button to remove all the listed malware.
When removing the files, MBAM may require a reboot in order to remove some of them. If it displays a message stating that it needs to reboot, please allow it to do so.

Once the computer has rebooted then proceed with the ESET Scanner instructions I gave above.
After that is complete and you have rebooted then run a new HJT scan. Post back here with all the logs.

I have to stress again, there is a very good chance, I feel at least, that your McAfee program really isn't working. I would honestly suggest that you unintstall it entirely and choose a new av program.
There are several great FREE anti-virus programs that work extremely well. I use Avira Free and another good one is Avast Free. You should consider one of those two after totally uninstalling McAfee. Hold off on this for now until we are certain the computer is clean. MBA-M is a program everyone should have on their computer and update and do at least weekly scans. It is NOT a one time fix program but a continuing program you should keep in your aresenal of protection.
Post back with those next logs and I will tell you what to do next.
Judy
