Malware causing sleep/hibernate crashes and internet crashes

Expand Post »
Hello, I've recently encountered the Antivirus Plus malware and have had trouble getting rid of it completely. Here's what I've done so far:

First I did a system restore to a date before the malware appeared. The only remaining symptoms I could see were that IE and Firefox were still broken and that any attempt to sleep/hibernate caused a crash & restart. I've since downloaded Google Chrome (which works normally for the internet).

After discovering this site I followed the sticky to the best of my ability. Unfortunately I could not run ESET Online Scan because IE doesn't work, but the rest of the logs are below (Malwarebytes, and DDS scan logs).

What should I do next to fix these remaining issues? Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Malware causing sleep/hibernate crashes and internet crashes
Quote ...
First I did a system restore to a date before the malware appeared.
Too late now but this is the one thing you never want to do. This is NOT going to remove malware or infections OR a legitimate program for that matter. It can only make things worse because often times what is removed will only be the uninstall files. Don't do this again.
You need to do the following:
Please Run the ESET Online Scanner and post the ScanLog with your post for assistance.

* You will need to use Internet Explorer to to complete this scan.
* You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.

* Be sure the option to Remove found threats is checked and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
* When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.

Reboot the computer.
Download and run HiJackThis. Save the log and post back here with the ESET log and the HijackThis log.

Re: Malware causing sleep/hibernate crashes and internet crashes
Thanks for the reply. Since Internet Explorer doesn't work normally, I wasn't sure how to do an ESET Online Scan at first. IE still works whenever I use it inside Sandboxie, so I did this when I ran the ESET Scan. I don't know if running ESET inside Sandboxie will have made worthwhile results, but here they are anyway. If there is another way I should try using ESET (in other words, another way to avoid IE's crashes), then please let me know so I can redo the ESET scan for you.

Here's the ESET log:

Here's the newest ESET log:

Re: Malware causing sleep/hibernate crashes and internet crashes
First thing you need to do is go to Add/Remove and Uninstall that SpeeditupFree program. It is from a company with a very POOR reputation. This may be some of the cause of all your problems. I will warn you, this program is EXTREMELY difficult to remove. But you MUST try. Their website alone has an extremely POOR reputation, with evidence of spyware, malware, phishing with links to at least one other website with a matching reputation. Try to uninstall it and report back to me with the results. This must come off first before we go any further.

Re: Malware causing sleep/hibernate crashes and internet crashes
Using the add/remove program list, I've uninstalled SpeeditupFree. It's no longer in the add/remove program list, and I could not find any traces of it on my own using the basic search function from the start menu besides a couple of shortcuts (they couldn't be removed for some reason, because the file connected to them was removed during the uninstall, I think).

Is this enough to consider SpeeditupFree to be gone, or are there further steps to take to make sure it's gone?

Thanks again.

Re: Malware causing sleep/hibernate crashes and internet crashes
For the moment we will assume it is gone...may not be entirely but we will hope that it is.
Run HiJackThis again and put check marks next to the following entries if they still remain:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [My Web Search Bar Search Scope Monitor] "C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\2.bin\m3SrchMn.exe" /m=2 /w
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Google Desktop Search] "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe" /startup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Search Defender] "C:\Program Files\Speeditup Free\SearchDefender.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LogitechSoftwareUpdate] "C:\Program Files\Logitech\Video\ManifestEngine.exe" boot
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Google Update] "C:\Users\Joseph.Josephs_PC\AppData\Local\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe" /c

Once you have placed the check marks then click the Fix checked button. Exit HJT and reboot.
Your Java program is WAY out of date. You appear to be running version 1.4.2_03. Current version is version 6 update 18. Go HERE and download the Offline Install and save it to the desk top.
Then close all browsers and go to Add/Remove and Uninstall ALL older versions of Java you find there. Once that has completed then go to that Install file on your desk top, double click to install.

Now the reason to use that Offline install...sometimes when choosing the one which just installs you may miss something else offered that you do or don't want. By using the Offline install you easily see those other items which may be offered, they generally vary, from toolbars to the Open Office program. There will be a check box for anything else offered, If you don't want them just be sure there are NO check marks in them, then you won't get them. Believe the default will show up as all ready checked, just click to take the check mark out of there. Then let the program install, it will only take a few moments and when it is complete go back to the download page and on the right side you will see Verify Now. Click there to go to the verification page to be certain the installation was successful.
Then run a new HJT scan and post back here with the new log.

Re: Malware causing sleep/hibernate crashes and internet crashes
I've updated Java, and verified the new installation. I was able to fix the entries listed in HJT you identified except for this one:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Search Defender] "C:\Program Files\Speeditup Free\SearchDefender.exe"

I couldn't find it in the list. Here is the new HJT log:

Re: Malware causing sleep/hibernate crashes and internet crashes
Are you still having the sleep/hibernation problems?
Quote ...
The only remaining symptoms I could see were that IE and Firefox were still broken ....IE still works whenever I use it inside Sandboxie
I believe your problem with BOTH Firefox and IE IS this Sandboxie program. Oh, it is working exactly as it should, the settings FORCE both browsers to only work INSIDE this program. Sandboxie will automatically supervise any instance of Internet Explorer as it starts, even if it was not started directly through a Sandboxie facility or command and the same holds true for Firefox also. In other words neither browser will work properly UNLESS run from within this program.
I am really not certain why you have this program installed, protection I assume. Well obviously if your computer had all this malware as shown removed by MBA-M and the ESET scanner on it and also Antivirus Plus then it really made NO difference whatsoever. Installing an additional browser not "Sandboxed" by this program in order to properly get online then defeats the whole purpose of this supposed security program. What is the purpose of having a program on the computer that you have to "skirt" around in order to use the computer in a normal way?

This program has known published conflicts with many programs, many that people use every day in the normal course of computer usage...some printer drivers and software, some anti-virus programs, some firewalls. It will conflict or stop some very normal activities with some browsers...things as simple as adding a favorite or bookmark for some legitimate, clean web sites.
I am not familiar with this program, in fact yours is the first computer I have seen using this software but after researching this I am not surprised I have not found it in other logs.
There are specific settings which must be used at all times with both IE and Firefox or the browsers will not function properly because the program will stop them from functioning, so you cannot complain about IE and Firefox not working properly I am fairly certain it is because of this Sandboxie program.
My advice is Uninstall it and I think you will be surprised. It definitely offered very little protection as you can well see with the infections you had on the machine.

Re: Malware causing sleep/hibernate crashes and internet crashes
I've uninstalled Sandboxie, rebooted, and still cannot open IE or Firefox. I also got this message when I tried to hibernate and got a BSOD:
