Computer being Abnormal

0

hey guys, my problem is that my download speeds have gone down, and I mean noticeably down. i ran the speedtest and my speed was was not even half of what my ISP average is.

i'm not sure if its my computer giving out on me since it is about 4-5 years old. is there a way to find out if its just my hardware giving out or if it is a virus?

another problem is that it starts up REALLLLLY slow and that is an understatement of how fast it used to be.

=======================================================================

I could not get gmer to work because it would just hang and freeze my computer to the point that i could not do anything but push the restart button on my tower.

Not to mention i do believe you have several virus/spyware invasions which will not be helping in anyway and several antispy ware program this can cause huge conflict because the will fight to open files first this is often worse than having a virus.

Now you can clean this up but you best bet is to simply format and reintall windows i am sure your perfomance will return to normal after doing this.

Remember to backup you computer try DMailer Backup i recommend it because it free and suits every situation. www.dmailer-backup-software.com

If you need instructions for this let us know, i will be curious to see the result after format so please do come back and share the result.

hi. i dont really know much about reformatting but can you tell me important things i should know. like am i supposed to know what kind of motherboard, video card, sound card i have or what not? and if i do need to know that where can i find out? thanks

You need the driver cd that came with the computer to install the drivers after, if you dont have it you will need to find out what motherboard you have to reinstall the drivers. Open the case get the name of the board and then search for it in google.

The cd is probably also the windows cd that came with the computer.

then just insert the cd restart you computer boot to cd by following the prompts or by going into bios and specify boot to cd. then follow the prompts of the install.

you can chase up the drivers later but try get the network card driver first if it is not on the windows cd this way you can go on the internet to download the rest of the drivers. But as i said they will probably be on the windows cd yo will know because the cd wil lbe called something like recovery cd(will have your drivers) and not window whatever.

and as i said before back your data up some how to be safe.

If you are going to help, at least recognise the software that is being used. There has been no hijackthis log posted.

Ok yes sorry about that, have not heard of olp and assumed it was a hijack this log they do look similar i will have a look at OLP now.

Uninstall the programs that you don’t want. These programs take up hard drive space, and they can slow down your computer. You should remove unnecessary startup items. Run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter on a regular basis. Try to upgrade your memory. These factors will help you to speed up your system during virus scan.

Have no idea what program you are talking about. There is NO OLP log showing here, it is the DDS scanner that was run. Exactly WHERE do you see virus/spyware invasions?
I see NO anti-spy programs that would conflict with each other. The only two showing are SUPERAntispyware and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, neither would conflict with each other as they are scanners and neither is running all the time.
One thing I DO see in the DDS log is this:
AV: AntiVir Desktop *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated) {C19476D9-52BC-4E93-8AF3-CCF59F7AE8FE}
AV: Shaw Secure 9.01 *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {E7512ED5-4245-4B4D-AF3A-382D3F313F15}
FW: Shaw Secure 9.01 *disabled* {D4747503-0346-49EB-9262-997542F79BF4}
FW: Avira FireWall *disabled* {11638345-E4FC-4BEE-BB73-EC754659C5F6}

Meaning there are TWO anti-virus programs and TWO Firewalls on the computer. That IS a big, giant NO-NO. The absolute rule is ONE anti-virus program and ONE firewall. However, Avira Does NOT show in the Installed programs list. So Where is it? It must still be on the computer or else it would not show in the log as disabled. You need to do a file search for it ASAP. It IS there someplace.
To recommend a reformat at this time, as far as I am concerned is bad advice. There is nothing at the moment indicating a reformat is the way to go.

While the number of programs installed sometimes will affect computer speed, IF the hard drive is getting full, at the moment I wouldn't say this is a must. How much hard drive space do you have remaining?
Yes, definitely stop unnecessary auto starts as this can slow boot time but unless all are running during a scan this wouldn't necessarily slow av scans.
What definitely WILL slow everything is two av programs and two firewalls.

well, i reformatted guys and it still hasnt fixed the problem :( . i think it might be my hardware thats shot since its like 4-5 years old and it barely gets turned off. how do i see which parts on my computer are still good and which parts i need replaced ? it would be cheaper to build a new computer than to buy right ?

Since it is this old I would recommend a new computer myself rather than try to replace piece by piece.

as jholland1964 said computer that old needs replacing due to the fact Micro Soft XP support is ending soon and that puts you attempting to rebuild a computer around a very soon to be orphan OS. Plus that puts you 2 OS's behind compatibility curve and I guarantee your present computer will not run Win 7 or whatever is next.Good Luck. Later---

>>>Biker920;1243556]as jholland1964 said computer that old needs replacing due to the fact Micro Soft XP support is ending soon and that puts you attempting to rebuild a computer around a very soon to be orphan OS>>>>

Actually, flipboi15's computer is running XP SP3 so it is fully supported by Microsoft until April 2014, which is four years from now so MS support for HIS or any computer running XP SP3 is NOT ending soon, 4 years is a long time.

The fact that the poster is running XP had nothing to do with my recommendation to get a new computer. If all of the hardware on the computer was running well and correctly this would not have been my recommendation. I made my recommendation because the poster clearly said "i think it might be my hardware thats shot since its like 4-5 years old and it barely gets turned off. how do i see which parts on my computer are still good and which parts i need replaced ?"
It would take forever to go through each and every part to determine which part was good and which should be replaced. Purchasing a new computer would be the best way to go.

As far as building one from scratch being cheaper than buying on all ready built, I honestly don't know, that is not within my area of expertise. I know you can purchase a good basic computer today, running Windows 7 starting at around $300, depending on what you add to that, software, hardware, etc., of course that increases the price and that would be determined by the buyer. I myself could not build a computer.

You would have to look at what you want from the computer, software you want to add, video, audio, what you are going to do with the computer, etc. and then decide the way to go.

Judy I didn't catch the SP3 as it was in the mb log not the post I don't read those logs if you are posting in a thread because I know you've already done it better than me. flipboi15 listen to jholland1964 she won't steer you wrong. Until you get into very high end units it is cheaper to buy a consumer prebuilt computer. Dun it Later---

>>>Until you get into very high end units it is cheaper to buy a consumer prebuilt computer>>>

Thanks Biker for the info on "build or buy". I know a bit about computers but I know if I tried to build my own that my XP SP3 computer would expire before I got it built!:D but I can call Dell or HP or whomever, tell them what I want and I can have it delivered to my door in less than a week!

If you figure cost alone you have to remember just the OS is going to cost you probably $300 and then add all the computer parts you need you can see how much more it likely will cost. If you are very knowledgeable with electronics, have the time...well, choice is yours.

If you can boot into Windows go to Start|Run|Type "msconfig" and bring up the system configuration utility. Select startup and look at the programs that load when booted and determine which ones you DO NOT need to load when you boot. Unselect those programs one at a time to see if there is an improvement in speed. Let me know!

Poster has all ready reformatted the computer. Unless he reinstalled every single thing he had on there don't know that would make a lot of difference, though checking can't hurt. We could advise what to turn off if a HijackThis log was posted.http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/
One thing that would have definitely slowed things down originally was the fact there were two av programs and two firewalls running on the computer, a big NO-NO.
If the only problem is slow downloads you should also check with your internet provider on this.
If the downloads are P2P files...dump the P2P programs.

Hi,

As the computer slowing down is the older problem which has been caused to most of the people using computer. When the computer is new it works faster and then finally goes on slowing down. All such person should need to take care like cleaning up the unnecessary files, installed softwares as well as doing the disk clean up every month and cleaning the temp files every day. You need to stop the unnecessary services running in the background by typing "msconfig" in the Run as stated above. Always try to use the default software installed within the OS rather than installing the third party softwares unless necessary. It will really stop your system from being slow down. Every year try formating the your hard-disk after taking the backup as well as perform Defragmentation.All these step you need to take care for the better performance from your PC and for it's longer life.
